Shrek

All three in one go.  I've never watched them, in spite of posessing the films for numbers of years.  Absolutely silly - and I loved them.  :D

I can't say they're perfect - that honour belongs to The Princess Bride - but they are jolly entertaining.
;D  Andrij.  I pronounce you Complete and Utter GIT

Transcendence

Technology meets the creation myth.  You can tell it's high concept, as the actors speak in this reverential whisper that gives it the aural landscape of a mystic journey.  By the end it descends into a series of sci-fi tropes.  A bit worthy and therefore dull.

Of course, if it was real, the sentient computer would start each day planning to cure diseases and increase humanity's grasp of its place in the cosmos.  But then look back on its day realising it spent much of it looking up pictures of bewbs and fuzzy kittens.

War Games (1983)

Cold War Thriller with 5 1/4" floppy discs, a rather young looking Matthew Broderick, dial up modems and of course the W.O.P.R. with all the blinking and bleeping lights!

The only winning move is not to play!

Hmm, and there's a new Terminator out in June-ish time. I suppose it can't be worse that the pointless and instantly forgettable brain fudge that was the last one (I'd forgotten that one before I left the cinema). They're bringing Arnie back to life, which has got to be a good for a laugh. I'd pay good money to watch him and Boris Johnson try to fight each other to death with nothing other than croissants in a large paddling pool filled with strawberry jam.

Mind you, I expect that won't be the plot.

So silly you'll be left wondering what you've just watched. A goof-ball 2001 perhaps?

They've aged very well (other than the suspiciously low tech computers). Aliens still is still the boss alien-fighting movie.
I reckon a good test of the longevity of a film is the quote quotient.

Aliens scarcely has 5min without some fantastic lines, hearing them instantly flashes back to the scene.

Not forgetting...

Vasquez: No. Have you?

Oh yes, as mrcharly said it is full of quotes. I will not go to IMDB and start to read them, because the high risk of a DVD falling into the player and then the afternoon/evening is gone

I think it goes like this:

Alien: Fantastic horror film, canonically passes the Bechdel Test.
Aliens: Fantastic action film.
Alien 3: Sigourney Weaver with a buzzcut.
Alien Resurrection: Sigourney Weaver sniffs Winona Ryder
Alien vs Predator: Computer game spinoff, expectations appropriately low.
Prometheus: Steaming pile of pretty WTF.

The shortly to be ex-marine on having to give up his ammo on account of the big temperamental nuclear thing above: "What the hell are we supposed to use man? Harsh language?"

I was horrified to learn that Alien was 1979 and Aliens 1986. I'd always imagined I'd seen them the first time around, but evidently not because I'm not old enough. It's amazing how good they still look and how the special effects have held up and actually look a lot better than some of the more obvious CGI that litters modern blockbusters.

Sigourney Weaver does Hellboy with a basketball.

Keanu Reeves seems to be an unnecessary embellishment

Typecast again! ;)

We watched some of 2001 when it was on the telly t'other night. I came across it while channel surfing and just left it on. I was surprised to learn that my wife has never seen it before. Though not surprised on reflection as it's a bit too spacey for her tastes. But she was rather taken by it. We didn't stay up to watch all of it though, as it was past our bedtime, but she seemed keen to sit down and watch it properly on another occasion.

Next project: get her to watch Rocky.

They should have drawn a line and quit while they were ahead.

I added the line.

My recommendation for a good laugh-out-loud flick is...wait for it..."Ted".

It's  film about a boy's Teddy Bear that comes alive after he wishes on a star.

Look, I realise what this sounds like but stay with me on this.  Have a few beers and watch it with your mates, it's bloody great.

Speaking of Aliens number five is on its way.

And it'll be Neil Bloomkamp direction it (District 9, Elysium and soon-to-be-released Chappie).
He's the right guy to do it. Just hope he can handly Sigourney Weaver better than he did with Jodie Foster.

WRONG.

It is shit. End of.

On the Blomcamp front, I saw a trailer for Chappie the other day and, even before I saw the "directed by" I knew, as Chappie looks just like one of the cop robots in Elysium.
I feel like Captain Kirk, on a brand new planet every day, a little like King Kong on top of the Empire State

I wasn't old enough either,  they wouldn't let me into the Odeon to see it when I was 15  >:(   It was an X certificate.

Yeah, don't get me doing the Prometheus thing again. That's in my Dan Brown's Inferno bucket.

I really can't remember Alien Resurrection at all other than, now I've been reminded, the basketball scene with Hellboy. On the grounds that I have started so I'll finish, I'll watch them at the weekend.

Aliens was the first 18 certificate film I saw in the cinema.

Alien Resurrection is ok, it's been a bit overly hated in my view.  It's got some interesting ideas and continues some of the underlying themes from the earlier films. I think people would have liked it more if the alien/human creation towards the end didn't look quite so silly.

It's also an interesting collaboration between Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Joss Whedon (whose crew of smuggler misfits have a more than passing resemblance to a certain named-after-an-insect SF show).  And it's got Ron Perlman in.
