Yes

How did you know?  I was just eating a packet of sesame snaps (well 3 packets, actually) and it occured to me that I had no idea where they come from.

Your go

How did you know?

No idea. I just looked at it and thought sesame. Must have seen a picture of a sesame plant before somewhere. It's not something grown as a crop in the UK so far as I know, I think it needs a lot of sun.

It bears some resemblance to a foxglove in flower shape, and overall plant physiology.

<googles>

Lo and behold! The South African and Limpopo foxgloves are related! (all set about with fever trees).

When I bought oils I saw all these pictures, or some like them, in marketing blurb.

I've seen flatus's latest in the flesh, in Tobago. I didn't think you could eat the fruit?

Sesame snaps are (frequently, I'm sure not always) made in Poland, but I've never seen sesame growing there. Probably doesn't have the right climate. Which is odd. But then, cocoa doesn't grow in Bourneville.

Yarp

Emits a caustic substance I'm told.

This should fox you. I reckon Ian will get it though  ;)

Is that tobacco?

I have to say that's reasonably wild guess on the basis that you said Ian would get it and I remember reading that he spent some time in Virginia in his youth. ;) Furthermore, I recall my dad growing some tobacco in the 1960s and I don't remember it looking like that.

Not baccy, no.

I once galloped through some baccy fields on a horse on my way to gallop through a coffee plantation.

Tobacco (which, unlike sesame or that crop, does grow in Poland) has huge leaves. Which might be how people came to smoke it; use the huge tough leaves for wrapping bundles of whatever, at the end of the day, sitting round the campfire, throw dried out leaves on fire and inhale.

That crop there is, as the mention of ian hinted at, keenwah or Queen Noah.

Yes, cashew 'apples' can be eaten, they're quite tasty. They're ripe for about an afternoon though, so you have to buy them just-so and scoff them. They're often made into liquor (I've had cashew fruit beer) to use them up. You can get them at the market in Brazil, along with fresh cashew nuts. They don't transport, so you have to get them fresh in the tropics. You also get them in Vietnam and thereabouts.

Mature cashews are huge, sprawling trees.

Quinoa is actually related to spinach and not grains. Cheeky. See also buckwheat. Not wheat at all.

Yes...the very place. I rode up into those hills with a farmer who spoke no English, and my Spanish is non-existent.

I'd managed to get him to take me out on horses for an agreed sum of $20. At the top he stopped and wanted a chat. It was awkward. He was winking at me and saying something like "los chicos cubanos son muy bellos". I looked blankly at him. He continued, more emphatically. More blank expressions and palm up gestures from me. This went on for about a minute until he finally said, with a look of disappointment, "sexo". I realised he was expressing his admiration for the beauty of Cuban women. Belatedly, I nodded my wholehearted agreement, but he looked crestfallen.

It's grown here, too, probably for the same reason that the UK developed a taste for port.  There are drying sheds within 50k of our place.

Obviously too challenging. I was puzzling over what sort of nut it could be. I've now come to the conclusion that it's not a nut. But I don't know what it is.

We've done capers, and it isnt nutmeg.

I'd suggest looking at the leaves as a clue as to the type of plant, then taking it from there....

Dr Google claims it is a fig. Dr Google (on this occasion) is wrong.

Looks like rose leaves but they're too glaucous.

I'm reckoning it doesn't make an oil and that's why I don't recognise it.

Figs have leaves large enough and appropriately shaped to shield a grown man's modesty...

Yes - it's a lovely flower, and I thought it was striking that the centre of the flower (carpel?) was pentagonal, and the okra pods are pentagonal in cross-section.
