Rode right past the one on Hoe Street without noticing it was there (they've moved that one too) and the one in Forest Road was all out of 1949-model IDPs.  But now I know where they all are – having consulted Thee Mappe – so will renew my quest tomorrow.

Our PO is now only open for about 5 hours a day.  3 hours from 9 and 2 hours from 2 o'clock and no longer opens on Saturday mornings.  Words like inadequate, pathetic and useless come to mind.

At Christmas I was given a £50 voucher for Waterstones.   Can I find it ?  Can I hell.  I suspect I've got until late November to find & use it. Time to do some tidying.

Fucking cars.
In Edinburgh. Junior has just kerbed his car destroying both lefthand tyres on his older Ford Focus.
"Daddy gips it!"

Two flats, one spare.
Swap one flat for spare to hold car up, take flat wheel to tyre place.
Explain situation, purchase 2 new tyres, one fitted to this wheel, and we will return shortly with the other.

Only the second flat cannot be removed.
Locking nut mangled and tool breaks in it.
To the Ford dealer.... you need the magic key code which we do not have, and then a several week delivery time!
Call out a mobile wheelnut remover guy who has at it with a BFO impact wrench.
After an hour, he has broken the wrench. Gives up.
No longer a roadside job, requires recovery to workshop for possibly destructive removal.

Oh look, he has RAC cover with his insurance.
This is utterly worthless.
Took 5 hours for someone to show up, with robo-texts every 30 mins.
When they finally show up, at 8 PM, its a man inna van, despite being repeatedly told its a recovery job.
He takes one look at it and says "That's a recovery job, mate!". No shit.
He taps at his ipad and calls out a recovery truck.
Incoming text... we are now back at square one, and we can expect another 5 hour wait.
We cancel the recovery, which I think is what they wanted anyway.

This morning, I called a local recovery company and talked to an actual person, and have an actual timed appointment for this afternoon.  Here's hoping.

<ETA> Yep, local recovery service:
-Call picked up instantly by human.
-Took basic details, tells me driver will call back shortly to arrange time.
-Driver does indeed call back within 5 mins, and says 'early PM, will call back at 10:30 with more accurate time'.
-Driver calls back at 10:30 as promised, and makes appointment for 12:30.
-Driver shows up at 12:28.
-Cost of recovery from one side of Edin to the other, one hour total elapsed time: £80.  Was on the lower end of what I was expecting.

Driver said that around 80% of his work was from people utterly frustrated by RAC and similar.

That was announced a while ago - seems an odd decision?   - but then so was the closure of Coventry as that served a vast tract of country to the east of Brum

IIRC years ago the Edmonton/North Circular Road site was a Queensway Furniture store?

So I need some crispy* folding FOREIGN banknotes on account of going to Abroad next week.  But soft!  What is this?  HorseyBank will deliver it to you door the following afternoon if you order it before time X, free gratis and for nothing!  So because I was having to stay in anyway for the useless workshy twats of UPS to (fail to) deliver a new NAS, I thought “I will have some of that, oh yes!”  And ordered some USD at a time well before X o'clock.  And guess what?

They’re not here >:(

* Very few banknotes in this day and age are actually crispy but…

Edit: turns out they use Royal Snail for delivery.  Royal Snail, unlike UPS, are not useless workshy twats but they were on strike on Wednesday.

Rain's brought back the mozzies.  The bloody things were singing in my ear last night and gave me two adjacent itchy lumps on my right hand for an encore.

I have an advance ticket on a train. The train is running 56 minutes late. There are other trains. Can I take one of those?

"No! No, you can't get on this train unless yours is one hour late!"

ETA: Despite running below line speed, it looks like it's going to arrive at KGX a mere 59 minutes late, so avoiding the delay repay.

ah that old chestnut, France have used that for years. Weighing up which train would end up costing the most if delayed and then set it on a fast track to destination, not stopping at "cheaper" stations. Great fun if you are going into terminus as you will be flying, though not so if you were planning to get off at a station you are now flying past.

Well not quite.

If you are on a time critical journey it may be better to have reserved seats on an open ticket. Advance tickets are sold for one specified  train, so if it's late tough.

Obviously they will try to keep all trains under the hr delay to reduce refunds regardless of whether you have an advance ticket.  I think there's a partial refund for +30m?

Useful to note that split tickets which seem to becoming a popular alternative to advance tickets, also mean you have less opportunity for recompense for delays.

It's almost as if the TOCs and NR have run the numbers on their contracts for ticket income v ticket refunds due to delays, and agreed how to mitigate losses.

And of course each TOC has it's own rules about when and if you can claim a partial or full refund and/or hop onto another service.

I think that the hopping onto an alternative service requires an actual agreement for each instance of delay.  The default is NO.

Aren't most TOCs on management contracts now rather than any form of p&l?

OK, it ended up 70 minutes late, so I get the refund.

The station staff said the rule for LNER for taking an alternative was 60 minutes. They also agreed that the stated 56 minutes late was optimistic a LIE, given that the train was somewhere north of Grantham, so even if it wasn't broken it would have to break records if it really did arrive less than an hour late.

Luton Airport: your 3-letter code is LTN. Always has been, so your branding using LLA is confusing. Luton ain't in London, however wishful your thinking might be, so stick with LTN, kthxbai...
