So I'd finished the qualifiers, said goodbye to the family, and bought all the right maps. I'd even shaved, to see if the myths were true. Somehow I resisted watching all the footage on YouTube; I wanted the images to be fresh to my eyes.
I still didn't know why. I didn't know the last time either, but that didn't keep me away from the starting line. Friends just seemed baffled by my endeavours, but at the same time clearly knew they didn't have what it takes. My biggest fear was admitting failure - too many people were involved for me to back out.
The only way I could explain it, was like reading War and Peace - you read it because it's there.
And so, I started. There were 13 chapters to this epic adventure, but everyone will tell you, only think about how far it is to the next control. Who knew if I would complete:
