Monday, 27 April 2020
Former London Sport CEO appointed as Cycling UK’s interim Chief Executive
Pete Fitzboydon, the former chief executive of London Sport, has been appointed as Cycling UK’s interim Chief Executive.
Mr Fitzboydon takes on the role from Paul Tuohy, who has announced he is stepping down from the charity after six years in the role.

Pete has a long career in the sports and leisure sector, including ten years at the Football Foundation.

More recently, he led Parkwood Leisure, a national leisure provider, where he completed a business transformation which helped the organisation grow by 20%.

He has also held non-executive roles with Badminton England and OpenActive, a Sport England-funded initiative that seeks to make sporting opportunities easier to find and book online.

Mr Fitzboydon brings with him extensive knowledge in how digital technologies can encourage more people to become physically active, having created the UK’s first sports technology business incubator during his time at London Sport.

He said: “I am delighted to take on the challenge of leading Cycling UK at a time when it has never been more important to get more people active.

“I have long been an admirer of Cycling UK’s work and I am looking forward to getting started and exploring how we can encourage more people onto their bikes, while working with governments on how they can play their part, too.”

I am delighted to take on the challenge of leading Cycling UK at a time when it has never been more important to get more people active.

Pete Fitzboydon, Cycling UK interim Chief Executive

Mr Fitzboydon will be in post until the autumn, while Cycling UK appoints to the permanent position.

Dan Howard, Chair of the Board of Trustees, said: “I’m delighted to announce Pete Fitzboydon as our interim chief executive. He brings a significant amount of leadership experience, having worked for twenty years in the sport and leisure industry.

“Our strategy is ambitious and I’m looking forward to Pete working with the board and our leadership team on the next stage of our development as we work to support millions more people to cycle.”

Phillip, there's really no need to post these walls of text. The link, and either a brief summary or (better) a little bit of commentary giving your take on the situation would be better.

As it is, I don't know why you think I should care about the CTC's latest press release. If you're their PR officer, you're doing a good job of convincing me you're crap at it. If you're trying to publicise concerns about their governance, it seems you're being crap at that instead.

I used to run the 'CTC shop' on a franchise basis from Geoffrey Butler/Bike+ (2001 to 2005) before the franchise moved to Evans, then Wiggle. The 'shop' technically still exists, although in reality it's just the supplier of their clothing range; who now sell direct.

When we lost the franchise it was made clear it was due to a better financial offer. The frustrating thing for me was we were awarded the franchise initially as they wanted it run with a focus on providing a 'service' more than it was to generate a 'revenue stream', the former was as it had been doing when it was run in house; giving members access to hard to find niche items that a more traditional retailer would be unlikely to stock let alone pay to advertise in their publication; we paid for three colour pages each issue. After BikePlus lost the franchise to Evans we continued running the same size advertisement in the CTC magazine under our own name but without the CTC clothing. I naturally had more freedom with what I could and couldn’t advertise and the turnover/profit increased significantly.

I have often wondered if all the changes implemented since my small involvement have been an improvement, our service focused shop still generated a healthy and increasing year on year revenue to the CTC, as well as off loading nearly all the risks and running costs. For sure retailing is now different from my time of running the shop; but, they have gone from getting 'something' to 'nothing'. I was a CTC member long before I ran the shop for them and cycled on a regular basis on their 'section rides', it definitely felt like a large 'club', associated with traditional cycling clubs, that in turn I felt an affiliation and emotional bond with. I confess that has diminished, not completely, but I don't feel that connection with 'Cycling UK' as much as I once did; yet they must be doing something right to be able to advertise a vacancy for that salary!

The rot started with KM.  He told me he wanted utility cyclists, not cycle tourists.  Then he said he was scrapping the National 400.  And everything became a cost centre.  If it didn't generate a profit it was scrapped.  Now it's just an aspiring quango touting for government money.
On the other hand, some at least of the local groups are benefiting from (benign) neglect.

The CTC has declined in exactly the way Simon Legg and others predicted.  I'm only a member for the third party insurance (BC is pro-helmet so I avoid them).  The magazine is trash, Chris Juden is long gone, the rebranding is juvenile (and a direct rip-off of Macmillan) and I don't see them arresting the general ageing of local groups with new blood.

I'm only a member because of my life membership - members mean nothing to the CTC.

It is no longer a cyclists' organisation - it is a body that promotes cycling (note the difference cyclists vs cycling). It promotes cycling by attracting funding from bodies such as government and local authorities.

I still get the feeling that CTC would be more than happy to offload the individual members and the member groups onto a different organisation (BC maybe, but their helmet stance would be the stumbling block for a large number).

Well I for one think that's an important job, that needs doing in the UK. Chris Boardman is about the only other person doing anything of note (and don't make me laugh by suggesting that is the same as BC doing anything!)

Meanwhile, all the local groups round 'ere are getting on with life just as they did before The Charity Incident*.

So much as there some other things I'd like them to do, I can't really see good reason not to support CUK in their work.

(*and yes, I did think this was a bad thing. And yes, I love Chris Boardman).

Yebbut, politicians don't give a flying fuck about Lower Muddling in the Marsh Cycling Action Group. And neither does any Regional BigTown Cycle Campaign, so organisations like Cycling UK have a role for those of us who live in the middle of nowhere and have no effective representation (in almost any subject).

Actually local campaign groups have been successful here. Campaigning does work. But it's most effective when it's done by the relevant council's own constituents instead of a more ephemeral organisation. See e.g. https://wfcycling.wordpress.com/2020/03/20/coordinators-report-2020/

I won't be dropping my Cycling UK membership but I can see very clearly which groups carry more clout.
