I paid in cash for my check up in sixpences and threepenny bits. My cheque book is elsewhere. Of course, the usual, nearby ATM was out of action so I had to dash to the other, distant one to get the cash out, thus almost making me late for Martin.

As is Young People using "the 90s" to perform the same syntactic function as I'd use "the 70s" (roughly approximating as "time shortly before I was born when technology was primitive and people seemed to spend most of their time smoking and being shockingly racist/sexist/homophobic")

Tell me about it. I left Uni in the 70's and I have 2 classic Triumph motorcycles, both from the early 70's, nearly 50 years old now...... That's a fair while ago.

It's more about generations, I think. If your dentist in the 70s was 50, he grew up at a time when using guineas was probably quite ordinary.

The build-up? I was a lowly programmer at the time, but I managed to wangle a course in Eindhoven at the right moment and some other guy had to convert my progs from £sd to £p.

Anyway, my grumble involves missing a perfect cycling day yesterday to care of post-operative dog, while the promised weather for today didn't materialize so I'm going stir crazy. Tomorrow being Monday my favourite patisserie will be closed.

I collected dinner money for the Kosher meals, which were 1/9 each, so 8/9 per week. I was thrilled when handed a NEW! 50p piece instead of the old ten-bob note in 1969...

Full decimalisation was 15 February 1971, only known as D-Day for a short time.

I remember the school maths books talking about "new pence" a lot. From context, I deduced that this meant the plastic ones you used for doing maths exercises in primary school, while "old pence" (usually referred to as just "pence" or "p") were the ones you used to pay for things in shops.

Which probably dates me.

You didn't notice that on the "old pence" used in shops it said "new pence"?

In thinking "shouldn't you have been noticing old/new Gambian <whatever>" I looked it up and, yes, Gambia's currency decimalised at the same time and it's yet another named after that German valley.

Eventually. Possibly after someone explained shillings.

I grew up using the what was marked as a one or two shilling coin as a five or ten new pence piece. I may still have one or two around.

My dad educate me on the old money, imagine my confusion as an eight year old in Austria?

My grandmother, who was nearly 73 at the time, had no difficulty. She was numerate and had used decimal currencies elsewhere. My 'Uncle Louis', who was 95 could not really cope.

I was a numerate pre-teen, who was fine with both systems. Mars bars' price seemed to hike...

My brother turned 70 t'other day; in the card I taped a 1950 florin - he'd sent me a penny for my seventieth!

Saturday before change a chippy in Teflon charged 6d for chips; following Saturday the same sign had the ascender scribbled out and a descender appended to make 6p. If we hadn't been so damned hungry we'd have gone elsewhere.

Feck this much needed holipop is going well.

Our van broke down just before = costly. Rental van = cost

Storm one nearly caused us not to get to the destination.

Now we found out why Peli has woken up in the midst of a asthma attack twice (first night we were sure it was just the journey up and a new place since it wasn't bad, second night it was serious), the rental got black mould.

Can't get off the island cause storm two will hang around until Wednesday.

Rental place is trying to find a new place for us.

What next ...

"The Pink Floyd Story" does not display anything at all. A still-had-the-cellophane-on-it "All You Need Is Love" likewise. Probably hardware then. Arse.
