Alba - Proposed Corran Ferry closure
« on: 04 February, 2010, 02:03:13 pm »
I have been informed by Mrs Lister from the Fort that the cooncil are planning a complete closure of the Corran Ferry in the spring of 2010, exact dates appear still to be confirmed.  See link attached for a local report.  Needless to say its causing a bit of a stushie (*) although I note that the needs of itinerant randonneurs don't merit  a mention in the news story.

Of course the threat of closure in "spring 2010" might be a softening up process where everydoy ends up happy when its closed in Q4.

(*) pronounced 'stooshie' = Scots word for an uproar or row.

Would affect the Twilight 600, Half Light 300, Lowestoft - Ardnamurchan 1000 and the Port/Fort Navigation 200 perms at least.

Hi   If the ferry is out of action don't mind going round Loch Eil .  A 300 may be  on if its a nice day up to Gairloch and over to Spean Bridge and back if its got the extra kms . If not out to Glenfinnan as well.

Hi   If the ferry is out of action don't mind going round Loch Eil .
There's also the Camusnagaul ferry, so you don't need to go all of the way round Loch Eil. Still an extra 30km or so.

The Locheil road will struggle with the traffic that would otherwise be using the ferry & A82 - even without the prospect of extra traffic there are apparently large sections have been damaged in the recent bad weather.

The Treslaig (Camusnagaul) ferry is an alternative but operates only about 4 or 5 times a day.

See, we really ARE doomed.

Hi   Another option with little traffic  Turn left to Strontian, up over nice hill to Polloch and up Loch Shiel.  Never see any cars on that section.  Have used the tandem a few times on the route so its ok, mind you the racers may moan.

Strontian, the only place in the UK with a chemical element named after it (if I'm recalling my schoolboy trivia correctly ?)
