Is the AUK website down?

Looks like it...

Thanks. I've sent an e-mail to the person who I think deals with it.

It's just gone down again just as I'm trying to get a start list for my event on Saturday :(
-
Drat. 2 in 2 days isn't good. ... aaand the hosting company can't be contacted
If things aren't resolved tomorrow there should be a backup server made available so you can retrieve the start lists.

Thanks; I've got most riders saved in Excel can manually add the others. Entries closed anyway (perils of allowing last minute entries a week after ordering cards of which I have now run out) although I temporarily reopended them before the site went down

Riding a 300 DIY by GPS tomorrow, but AUK website is down and I am unable to enter.
Have emailed my DIY organiser (Chris Smith) with details and GPS file in the hope that this can be accepted as entry. Anybody have any experience of this, and any thoughts on the subject?

it's back up; hurry before it goes down again!

Thanks Martin, I'm all sorted.

We're all reasonable men. Mostly. Just put in an email what you'd expect to provide on line and we'll sort the details out once the systems up.

It'll be fine :)

When the web server's going through a flakey period (and after all, it is a Bank Holiday weekend coming up, so it's kinda traditional) it is actually the by-GPS entries that are most likely to fall through the cracks. This is because whilst data (such as a normal event entry) is backed up to a 2nd server instantly, the files structure including any uploaded files is only synched once per day.
We will publish the address for the 2nd server if things get bad over the weekend.

AUK has plenty of money. Should review hosting options. In the current climate anything less than nearly 100% availability causes friction.

All hosting companies claim 100% uptime, so any change is just a pig in a poke.
-
Not sure who deals with it these days but I'm presuming the people who need to know have been told?

Must be that Guardian article driving traffic and interest!
It would be good for the Audax UK social media streams to let people know we're experiencing unusual demand on the website but we hope to be back up soon.

Certainly many colleagues at work spotted me as the man in yellow in the photo a la depart... that blog must have quite a few readers!

The site is currently hanging on loading because it has to wait for the custom "Roboto" font to load from fontlibrary.org. I just timed it at eighty-two seconds for this one request (on fibre broadband).
It's not normally this bad, but it's always *bad*. Can we use Helvetica/Arial please?
-
Surely this would be better asked on the AUK forum? Remember, this is not an official AUK forum, and may not be viewed by the person who might be able to consider your request (which seems a sensible request to me if it is causing accessibility issues).

The problem is FontLibrary's hamster rather than the Auk Hamster and as such the AUK Hamster is powerless.
-
Fontlibrary is shit, I reckon their hamsters are pissed up in some bar somewhere.

If I was trying to get it fixed I'd email the relevant people directly (which I've done). This post was mostly general kvetching.
(the AUK forum meanwhile is for yelling into the abyss)

Why are they relying on FontLibrary's hamster in the first place? If you're going to use a weird font, surely the first thing you do is make a copy for your own hamster to, erm, nibble...

As long as it is not Cosmic Sans

The proper commercial font libraries only give you a license and force you to use some sort of clunky Javascript that requires showing their hamsters your magic numbers every time your page loads and maybe they'll think about letting you see their beautiful fonts. Rehosting the fonts is verboten.
However, having investigated a bit further, fontlibrary.org isn't one of those - it's just a library you're meant to download from. And the AUK custom fonts *are* being rehosted on the AUK domain. The bit they're hot linking is this tiny bit of CSS:
https://fontlibrary.org/face/osp-din
Which defines a font called DIN. Which isn't even used as far as I can tell...
You know what they say, pay six figures, get monkeys.
(at least it's no longer taking 90 seconds to load)
-
IIRC DIN font is used in the logo

Due to one of my mates having a liking for German cars, and typefaces, and always pointing out the DIN fonts on bits AND being able to identify every one specifically...
I believe it is, I could ask him to confirm but...
-

It may well be, but the logos on the page are PNGs.

Blimey. You could spell that out in hexadecimal using a camera from 1996 with a round-trip delay of 24 minutes. Which may be what they're doing...

We are not some commercial organisation that is trying to project a finely honed corporate identity FFS just use free fonts. The company I work for develops its own fonts and guards the copyright with big guns. We are not in business.

Where’s the list of Ultra Randonneurs gone ? It used to be with the hall of fame but not on the new site.

Font Library appears to be free fonts...
The cock up seems to be it linking to something it didn't need to so when FontLibary went down so did AUK
