Sussex Midsummer Corker - any interest?
« on: 16 July, 2019, 08:00:53 am »
A number of years ago, El Supremo’s 100k 2 AAA points (old system) Sussex Midsummer Corker was run out of Midhurst. In latter years Martin Malins took over the running of this ride.

It was suggested at this weekend’s Devils Punchbowl event that is should be resurrected for 2020.

However, before I commit to running this event , I’m looking to see if there is any interest for this ride.

Intent is to base from a Village Hall close to Midhurst

Closest station will be Haslemere

If it was in August next year might be able to persuade CET Junior back into the world of Audax.

Mr Bond (notp) is rather partial to a Sussex hilly hundred and if the timing is right I'm overdue joining him for a ride on his patch.  Interested.

The route was more or less this; can't remember the exact route thru Haslemere but all the hills are there

The name of the ride gives its date away - Sorry

The winter version was the very first Grimpeurs du Sud event in 2007. It ran once more as a summer event organised by El S before being dropped. I revived it between 2009-2012 as a summer only event as we lost quite a few other GdS rides at the time. I haven't seen what the top end looks like now since the A3 tunnel opened.

It has a few climbs (Glen Lea, Quell Lane and the last one Bexley Hill) to rival Cob Lane and definitely requires summer fitness!!

Glen Lea leads into High Pitfold which then loops back round to Upper Hammer Lane and Woolmer Hill Road, so shouldn't be an issue. I might go and do a recce ride soon.

I'm very keen (but then I was discussing it with you at the weekend so you've probably factored me in already Anton  :) )

I was looking to use the village hall at Stedham but cost is too much. Also limited parking.

Seeing if the Cocking hall cheaper and hopefully more parking spaces.

Have two controllers to help man checkpoints.

Will update this thread if/when event finalised

Now got a third helper to man control in village hall.

Cocking got plenty of parking space and slightly cheaper than Stedham.

Will look to get the route approved with the SE Organiser and AAA man shortly

The Cocking Village Hall, just South of Midhurst, West Sussex, is now booked for this event, and I'll be finalising the details once my Petworth Rides are over.

The Route will be

Stage 1 Cocking to Cocking

Cocking to Midhurst to Elstead to Checkpoint near North Maren to Near Compton to Chisledown and back to Cocking. (with lots of hills to climb and descend :))

Stage 2 Cocking to Cocking

Cocking to Midhurst to Woolbeding to Lynchmere to Near Haslemere to Glen Lea to Haste Hill to Blackdown to Quell Lane to Fernhurst to Hogs Hill to Bexley Hill to Midhurst to Cocking. (Again  will LOTS of hils)

The event is now in the AUK Calendar and will open for entries March 23rd once all details have been finalised.

Watch this space

Anton

Oh the one hill NOT included in the route and AAA points is the sharp climb up the drive into the Cocking Village Hall.

Very much looking forward to helping out at this one - have ridden the route twice and enjoyed it greatly.
