I'll have you know that I once did a live commentary on a chess game on BBC Essex. It went OK.

The worst bit was having to get into the Chelmsford studio for 7 a.m. on Mrs. Wow's birthday.

No worse than having a ventriloquist on the radio.

Chess commentary is easier than football commentary. You have more time to think about what you are saying and it's easier to avoid sounding like a complete idiot.

And Bishop makes a diagonal run across the board, moving into space ready for Rook to start his run up the left wing...

Did any chess players watch Any Human Heart? There was a chess scene - what a surprise, the 3 moves we see resulted in a "surprise" mate. Anyway ...

it looked like an impossible scenario, but we couldn't see the board, just the tops of pieces! Just wondered if anyone else noticed this (will take far too long to explain) ...

Typical, yet another example of the left wing bias around here.  ::-)  ;)

No, because if you are the opponent, it's on the right.  :P

I thought Murray Head et al were a bit modern for Radio 3?
