How many piano sonatas did Beethoven write?
« on: 24 November, 2012, 12:37:02 pm »
A genuine question. I always thought it was 32, and have 3 large red volumes on the piano which contains them all (I play 5 or 6 of them). However, R3 has just been talking about Andras Schiff playing a cycle of all 33 Beethoven sonatas. I can only assume that someone has recently discovered another one, but Wikipedia, normally quick to respond to authentic innovations, only gives 32.

I don't think R3 were referring to this offering, originally by Dudley Moore, I think.  ;D

Edit: oddly, the Radio 3 website associated with the programme talking about Schiff's recital of all 33 sonatas only refers to 32!

I think I will have to send an email. This is not the first time recently I've heard mention of 33 Beethoven sonatas.
