Do you have the GPS route? I've always wanted to see those places and I could change my 400km qualifying event.

Oh man. Got an exam on may 9, might have to ferry over and give this one a go!

That's definitely a start time of 1800? Blimey...

Yes, the start time is 18h
That's so that you can make it for the “Last Post Ceremony” @ 20h, which is control no1.

A lot of Belgian 400s seem to start before it gets dark this year. Friday's one started at 22h   ::-)

I think it's a smart move, I'd rather be riding in the dark while I'm fresh than be wobbling my way along in the murk while drifting off to sleep!

That was a pretty memorable cycling experience which I learned important lessons from. I was very close to chucking it in but circumstances at 0200 meant that turning around was not much shorter than cracking on, and there wasn't a single McDonald's or petrol station I could hide away in within hundreds of kms. Like a fool I'd tried to keep with the hares which made me have a minor blow up, until rescued by a much more sensibly paced mob led by John, who very charitably put up with me until the damage of my 0400 bedtime and 0730 reveille in the bocage in a bivvy bag made itself apparent. At one point I thought about getting myself arrested so the cops would put me in a nice warm cell.

I was literally in survival mode in the wee hours, as in, keeping eyes out on the road for discarded insulative materials I could improv a sleeping system from. Alas Belgium is seemingly better with litterbugs than us and no such rescue was to be found, so I thought it best to just crack on and try to stay warm by riding the bike.

Thankfully it was at 0930 where things turned around. Firstly, the sun came out and warmed things up. The shops and cafes opened. After a very short nap basking in the sunshine atop Saint Nainze, everything was running smoothly and I finished in safe time for the closure of controls.

Cracking route and a valuable experience. It's these kinds of rides that prepare you for more to come imo.

18:00 is a good start time, ride fresh in the night and even full value riders will finish before sunset on the next day.

In my view the 18h start time does make it harder, by a margin. The trouble is that there are no 24h facilities at all, which includes street lighting! So, we set off with the first control at 45k - the organiser stamping our brevet cards in a field just before Ypres and then it was a dark, unlit, no break/control, in-the-middle-of-no-where slog until 186k. I arrived at 01.45. Again, the organiser was stamping cards in an unlit car park before another 100k. By 8am and 286k, I would have paid several hundred Euros for a coffee or something, somewhere vaguely warm and/or a little rest. On longer rides, hot food and drink is the key for me.

That said, I did know this before I started and I was using it as good PBP practice  :)
The route was wonderful.... and shocking at times to see fields of graves, not to mention the number we passed.

Compare this to the 400k "norm"....a 4am start on a Saturday so after 2hrs, the sun is up, by 7 the bakeries are opening, and after another hour, the cafes are opening. The controls are every 60k or so, each one in an open cafe. Finish by midnight, so only half the total night time cycling compared to this ride.

I'll take the latter, any day - but it's horses for courses. Each to their own.

I took 2x800ml bottles which were re-filled at 186k. Not much, but it was night time and fairly cold so I didn't drink as much as I would on a daytime ride.....when the cafes would be open.

I had 2x 600ml bottles and had to make it last. John actually rumbled me topping mine up from a front garden tap... A top up was also provided (bottled water) at the Australian memorial (and nothing else, in case you were wondering!).

I saw one rider carrying four bottles (in a rucksack of all places). This would be what I'd pack for next time.

Really enjoyed reading that. I know large parts of the route and even during daylight hours it's not easy to find anywhere to get refreshments and stock up without going way off route. I rode my own shorter version in August but only as far as Arras where my great uncle is buried.
Regards,

Alan

Cheers. I think that WW1 really has left a lasting impact in the area the ride goes through. Entire towns and villages were flattened and abandoned, so I suppose even a hundred years later it is still a bit barren-seeming.
