Not mine (!) - but I quite enjoyed this report from someone who was racing. Part of me thinks we should tell him it's not a race, but I remember seeing this lot coming south at Barnie when I was northbound and thinking how weird it was that we were part of the same event, and at the same time, not.

Nice one jochta - I left two comments by mistake. Still got numb fingers.

Great report Jochta. I started at 14.15 with an almost identical plan. I had a few words with you as you passed me well before St Ives and I can see that you continued to pull away in front of me.

I arrived at Innerleithen eight hours after you having slept at Edinburgh. I realised that I was not going to be able to make up the time and I was suffering with Achilles pain so I called it a day there.

Your return journey matched my plan but my body was not capable of it.

So glad you made it - I've got to wait four years to put my lessons learnt into practice.

My ride report is https://www.cyclechat.net/threads/your-ride-today.173254/page-970#post-4914338
It was great to see the yacf nameplates and ride/chat with some of you (and many others of all nations).

Great write-up Alex, especially the part about the new family with their avid interest in LEL and audax. I've gained a similar family now, and among all the excitement they seemed a bit disappointed with my standard answer to questions about how I would do things differently next time. Next time? You're having a laugh!!

Good to read about the ride from the other end... A bit scary actually. I know I was a bit out of it from time to time but he appears to have been right on the edge for days on end... at 27kph+ average mind you. Stravidence: https://www.strava.com/activities/1123031862 I know it's not a race but I quite like the fact there are a few ultranutters who will take it to the max.

Truly wonderful and very insightful.

Many thanks for sharing such information and the stories and many thanks from a very grateful rider.

Wonderful. I was a rider in 2009 and this year and a volunteer in 2013 so I've seen the event from both sides.  I will be a volunteer again in 2021. Your blog reminds me of just how much goes on beneath the surface and how much we riders should appreciate it.

Fantastic write up and a fabulous insight into the workings of a control. I think I only have vague memories of Thirsk as it operated so smoothly with no hassles or delays. Thank you to you and all your volunteers  ;D

Hi all

My report is now up: Fear and Louthing (boom boom!)

https://audaxery.wordpress.com/2017/08/14/fear-and-louthing-lel-2017/

I've had an interesting time writing it - there's a fine line between honesty and bad-mouthing, I hope I am on the right side of the equation. As you know we all get tetchy when sleep deprived and I hope I have managed to communicate that any issues with partners were mine as much as anyone else's.

I have, ahem, borrowed photos as I didn't take a camera. Photos from Jibberjaber, Ivo and Barry Covington feature heavily. Credits are there but if you want me to pull them no worries.

alotronic, a good ride, a good ride report and I am hugely impressed that you were instrumental in helping two other riders (a stranger and a friend) to finish by the skin of their teeth. No wonder you are happy with your accomplishment, it is well deserved.

Cheers LWaB. I remember you calling out to me about the bastard weather on Yad Moss and laughing at it, just what I needed. Shows that a little reality tweaks can really help along the way.

Terrific write up! Well done.
The photographs may not have been yours but they add a lot.
