Tan Hill overnight in October 2017 - now Friday 6th October
« on: 23 August, 2017, 11:57:36 pm »
Right, as the first one was a roaring success with a roaring tailwind back to Darlo afterwards, how about a re-run?

Date is now Friday 6th October

Dead simple set-up - meet at Tan Hill onna Friday night, camp up, get pissed, ride back in the morning. Your basic overnighter.

Tan Hill is actually quite simple to get to onna bike - about 30-35 miles from Darlo on the east (depending on your route, and I'll be happy to guide a feeder ride from Darlo station as I'll just be riding up and camping). This might be tricky on this Friday as I won't be in Darlo, but shout up if anyone does fancy it.

Options from the west are Penrith station (a bit farther but with a better chance of a tailwind), Oxenholme (hilly), or change at Penrith - I think - for Kirkby Stephen and a likely tailwind. Kirkby Stephen on the Settle-Carlisle line is the closest station, at about 11 miles away. There are probably more options from the west.

Accommodation - camping is a fiver in the charity box. There are also bunk rooms, with limited availability, at £30 including breakfast. And there are private rooms at the pub. You can arrange any of this yourself if you give the pub a call. There's no need to arrange camping, but anything else - yeah.

Come if you can - cycling encouraged, but we had a campervan and lovely Mike came up in his car last week, so come however you can. It's more-or-less a meet-up for like-minded folk, and I'll invite the VC167 as well once we've settled on a date.

Be prepared for this:

That's my dear wife and the back of our tandem just below Tan Hill. That was in October 2008.

I am interested, by the way. Sounds like a damned good idea!

I like the idea of this! Wouldn't be up for camping, but a room at the pub sounds good. Any of those dates would be ok, I think. I'd need to figure out how to get there (I've no intention of riding all the way from home...) but there seem to be plenty of train options.

The current Mrs Socks (aka Pam) has agreed to pilot the camper van, so I could cycle and meet you there.  Sorry to have missed the one this month - I was put off by the weather forecast, must be getting soft in my old age.
Sunshine approaching from the South.

First time in 1,000 years.

In the absence of a Mrs fboab, or a camper van, we will debate our sleeping options once the date is determined.

(That's long speak for we're in)

Works for me - I'd prefer to have the date fixed asap so I can book trains.

Me too! I'm calling it the 6th as there don't seem to be any objections.

As early as possible is good for me, to avoid the awful weather of the goth ride last year.

On a related note, if you want some gothic cycling wear, how about this?

Does this mean we're guaranteed good weather? Excellent!

Cross your fingers for me. I'm having a wisdom tooth removed on the 4th (it is supposed to be a simple one).

So, what sort of time did people arrive at Tan Hill last time? Just trying to figure out train times etc.

We got there about 7ish. I think we were aiming for 6, but I'm fat and unfit and we had a beast of a headwind. Karla got there nearer 10 I think?

Aye, 6-7 was a decent target. They do food until 9, but I warned the kitchen about Karla's coming, and they took pity on him and served him egg n chips. So late arrival isn't a problem.

Are you heading down East or West? We met at Darlo station at 2 and had a relaxed ride up including beers if that helps.

I got there almost bang on half 9, thankyouverymuch :p

Once I'd missed a train and the next one was late, I left Darlo around quarter to 7.  Kirkby Stephen is obviously much closer but it would have been a pain to get to from the east.  I don't know what the train connections are like from the WCML?

Carlisle, Kirkby Stephen, ride up. I'm still baffled how you got your kit in that bag mind.

Count me in, I will call the pub to book a room.

This looks fun. I'll see if I can get the time. If I succeed I'll ride up from Harrogate if anyone wants to join in.

Be good if PB and the Brum crown could make it too.
