I snapped a couple of insects with the macro setting on my Powershot on my recent trip to New York state. First, a Cicada - the sound they make is ever-present wherever there are trees. They seem to have an understanding of prime numbers that gives them an advantage over predators (no, really - look it up). I believe this is an empty skin vacated by the final larval stage:
I saw some really big ants there, easily 5 times the size of an average UK ant. This one however was normal sized. I studied it during a picnic, collecting food in an eminently socialist manner. My girlfriend remarked they liked sweet things, so I threw a miniscule piece of chocolate in it's path and it took the bait. I watched it for a good five minutes, hauling this massive chunk back to the nest:
