Feedback on my London to Newhaven route please?
« on: 10 May, 2016, 10:21:12 pm »
We could have taken the Avenue Verte suggested route, but that's 100 miles and really all we want to do is get to the ferry at Newhaven in time for 3.30pm.  I've chosen what looks like a pretty straightforward route, but I lack local knowledge and would welcome any more pleasant/easy to navigate suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

What day of the week are you going?  That first bit on the A23 is a bit gritty and motor-ful.  The route taken by the FNRTTC may be better (Belgrave square, Sloane square, chelsea bridge, Clapham Common, Tooting Bec, Mitcham, Wallington, Coulsdon Then rejoin your route although getting up on to Farthing Down can be character building as down this way we'd class it as hilly. Take care heading off the other end and over the M25, especially with a touring load on.  When you get down to Crawley, consider going east to Turners Hill then heading south via Ardingly, Lindfield, Bedales Hill and Slugwash Lane to rejoin your route.

When are you going?

Sort of. I'll try and draw it up on Garmin Connect or similar.  Your start time of 0500 makes your London bit easier though, so you may as well stick with that bit though.

The only time I've done the London end was an FnRTTC - which was a pretty sensible route, though no idea whether the roads get busy in the day. Once further south, the little lanes are mostly fine - and I'd second Tim's Slugwash Lane suggestion.

Not sure when you're going, but I'm down that way and happy to provide moral support / flapjack if you need it!

I'll see if I can dig out an old gpx of one of the FNRttC rides. At 5am I wouldn't imagine it will be too busy though.

We're setting off on Thursday 26th May :)

I was thinking you'd done a  FNRTTC to Brighton. I think we chatted on the way into Lindfield once. The route I described through Clapham and Tooting is based on the latest version on the FNRttC.

Ruthie, I got partway through drawing it on bikehike, then I see you've tweaked your route.  You've got it pretty much spot on now, so I'll stop.

Do you fancy company on the day, as you're riding through my manor?  I'll have to check if I can get a day off.

Seems to be a good route. When in Newhaven, go across the bridge and take the left-hand slip road, that takes you under the main road, and there you are. Bob's your Uncle.
Certainly never seen cycling south of Sussex

You've got the best route through my old patch, M25 to Turners Hill.

Enjoy!

Have you got food stops sorted?  I'm not sure on the current situation at Redhill Aerodrome but can find out.  It varies from one to two to one to a pile of charred wood and then one cafe again faster than I can keep up with.  There must be something even closer to your route but long term retrieval is a bit slow.  Horley is the half way point on London-Brighton so Turners Hill is probably half for you.

ETA: Turners Hill - of course!.  Tulleys Farm

Starting from Liz's place at 05:00?  Is she making you all a cuppa before you depart?

Assuming (hoping/praying) my back is better by next Thursday, whaddaya say to some extra company from the start?

Andrijj, that's very nice of you!

Unfortunately I'll no longer be doing the ride.  My employer has made it clear they don't want me doing it while I'm off work sick.  However the rest of the team are still going and I know they'd be delighted to have company if you would like to join them?

Liz wasn't terribly helpful when we requested breakfast.  Miserable old bag.
