Wouldn't a sync cable be problematic?  As opposed to a charge cable.  Or doen't that apply to the Edge 800, I dunno.

Hmmm, looking at top tube bags (the existence of which I was previously blissfully unaware), I'm not sure i'll need another cable with one of them attached.

Correct, no extra cable required, but the trick is to find one that allows your external power pack to fit in (with USB cable attached).

I just bought the next one up form Amazon (iep 392) - at £35.97 I thought fekkit, since I've spent that much more on other stuff in the past.  It's 12000 mAh so even more overkill

It's not an ideal fit though and I cannot connect both USB sockets when it's in the tri-bag

It looks like it comes with only the 'Base map'.
To all intents and purposes, that can be considered 'No maps'.

You will need to install maps of your own.
Either OSM, or Garmin City Navigator would be fine.

I had the 1:50 000 OS option and only ever used it for walking.  Far too much detail for cycling when on the move.

I use City Navigator Europe which is super.

I am aware of others that do just use the 'Base Map' supplied.

I agree with this. I use it with the OSM maps. Works fine for me and the place index is surprisingly complete. You can also use OSM maps with Base Camp which gives another option for route planning.

The standard model will be fine, speed will be taken from GPS signal. You could look for one of the bundles that includes speed/cadence sensor (worth having) and heart rate sensor (too frightening!).

I've got one, and have never had problems with rain (I normally use it to hold snacks, but I do use it for a light battery on occasion too).

My edge 800 has the OS maps - they're pretty damn good in my experience.


The detail is a pain in the butt when it towns though I have to agree there.

Mine has OS maps which I use when mountain biking, on the road I use OSM mapping, have them both on the SD card and just disable OS mapping when road riding.

Anyone got a recommendation for *decent* data transfer cables for the edge 800.


All the ones I've bought recently will charge it but not connect it to the computer  - I need a reliable cable *soon*  -I guess I don't mind paying for it if it works.

I bought a 800 recently and loaded maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ which are free and legal. The detail is good and I've used it to navigate a few times with no issues.

I have an 800 with OS maps, but never use them on the bike as they don't zoom elegantly - at a suitable scale for pootling, roads are the width of a small ocean. OS maps are a work of art, but they're not meant for a 2" screen! OSM works very well indeed for me, and gives a much clearer picture which zooms intelligently.

My 800 and 500 came with a charger that has connector one end for GPS and USB the other end that fits into charging plug or USB slot on computer.

No problems whatsoever.

Otherwise visit Maplins for suitable cable me thinks.

Yes but they rust and die if you go riding it wet weather.  I've been through several, the one that came with it went to the angels long ago. Maplins still exists?
Most of the ones I buy will charge it fine but will not give a data transfer connection.


I've bought two off wiggle now as they get good reviews.

To be fair the first set I bought (I buy two, one for home,one for the office) worked fine but the newer set were just chargers and nothing else.
