One of my work colleagues who lives in Regulator-land emailed to say it was snowing early this morning, so she decided not to come in.  Given the forecast for Londidium is quite a high risk of snow later today, that's probably wise.  It's a long walk back if the trains aren't running.

It is currently quite sunny out the window, which is much nicer than the greyness I cycled in through earlier.
Actually, it is rocket science.

It also says it was triggered by a freak event which happened all at once.

Sudden Arctic sea ice melt could do it if (1) the whole thing went at once, which isn't unlikely for floating ice on water, it's a phase change kinda thang, and (2) the wind was blowing all those bergs into the Atlantic where the had a mighty melty dump - which is much less likely; odds are they'd piffle out en route and in situ.

Greenland ice sheet melt would do it and the current offers on the Copenhagen table are at the 'worst case' end of the scale, anticipating 4-7 degrees of warming, at which you'd get that melt easily.
It's the suddenness of the change in salinity which is reckoned to have caused the rapidity of the drop in temperature. Without that suddenness, caused by the freak event I referred to, the conveyor would reduce over years, according to the models. I questioned the likelihood of a large enough part of the Greenland ice cap melting in a single summer - and nothing you've said has caused me to re-think that.

Forget the sea ice. The Greenland ice cap contains much more ice, because although it's a smaller area, it's a thousand times (2.3km vs a few metres) thicker than sea ice. Also, it's 100% fresh water, while sea ice is frozen seawater, complete with some of its salt. It starts out at 30% of the salinity of seawater. Old ice has much less salt in it, but the increasing melting of ice each summer in recent years has reduced the proportion of old ice. Only 10% of spring ice cover is now more than 2 years old, down from 30% a decade ago. Allowing for reduced overall ice cover, 75% of the old ice has been lost in the last 20 years without switching off the conveyor. I doubt the last 25% would do it, however quickly it melted.

If you compare UK temperatures with those on the other side of the pond at the same lattitude and wonder why we're not freezing our tits off, that'll be all the lovely Atlantic currents which have been bringing us warm water and good weather for centuries.

Problem is, the massive ice fields up near Greenland at the northern end of the Gulf Stream are melting and sending big ol' wodges of cold water into the ocean system and interrupting the flow of this rather useful Ocean Conveyor Belt.

Executive Summary:  We're fucked  :(

I don't mind a bit, or even a lot, of SNO, but if I had to change my commute to avoid being eaten by an Arctic Bear, I should be a tad put out ;)

Edit: Still bright and sunny in Harlow.

OK, time will tell, but those NE winds were exactly what we had in 1962-63 and 1987. In the latter case, Saarfend was the coldest place in the country for about a week, with 18 inches of snow lying.
...

My plans for tonight are to put the motorbike away and find the MTB.  I have now booked tomorrow off work to go riding in it; the alarm will be set early so I can have the first ride in the rush hour.

ok, I can now guarantee that it will not snow  ;D.

You're all gits!  >:(

Here am I, living less than 10 miles from the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, and even closer to some fine MTB trails, and what do I get? Drizzle, followed by a moderately fine day!

Bah!

It's passed though. It was dark and ugly for about 20 minutes in SE1 but now back to large bits of blue skies.

5-a-side (outside) tonight and then an 8 mile ride home. :) :) :)

Sno in NW10, I've just been out to get lunch.

And noticed as I passed my bike that my rear tyre is totally flat.  I thought it felt a bit flabby for the last mile here, it must be a slow one.  >:(

Still, at least I can mend it in the office where it's warm...

Only fun while it is fresh after is is compressed by cars it is like ice.
Also lots of cars sliding about on it can make me very nervous.
Cars pass me and spray me with snow feels heavier than water.

No snow here, just getting cold so there will be ice tomorrow morning.

Glad I took the walk up to the shop and left the bike.

It's already an ice-rink out there and the sun hasn't even set yet.  :(

Bright sun here and has been since about 0830. Might risk the back road for the run home...

Day off booked for tomorrow? (check)

Tandem? (check)
Fleece lined boots? (check)

I already have tomorrow off as annual leave so snow if it happens will be a huge bonus.
