Title: 13th Hills and Mills Saturday 25th January 2020 09.00
Post by: Mad Jack on 21 December, 2014, 10:10:23 am
An early season challenging 105km Audax event venturing into deepest East Sussex, (limited to 85 riders) take on the North face of Willingford lane up to Burwash Weald (68” fixed possible). North face of Argos Hill and enjoy views of the refurbished Argos Hill windmill. Kidd’s Hill is another highlight along the route (In the 1994 Tour de France, Kidd’s Hill was considered too hard by the organisers!). An Audax Altitude (AAA) & GDS qualifying event ride with fellow GDS baggers. Some of the route North follows the old Cuckoo line, where you still pass under the old bridges etc. Hot drinks and various snacks at the start included in the entry fee.
Start and finish in Hailsham.
Entries close on 15/1/20! No entries on the line. Sorry no permanent version available.

Indoor control @ the Pink Cabbage Produce Co Café Delicatessen & Grocer in Mayfield High Street TN20 6AB where you visit here twice and Lucy and team will keep you fed and watered, finish at the Lagoon leisure center Café in Hailsham.

My participation will depend on the FA Cup 4th round fixtures I'm afraid......not that my lot manage to get that far most years!

Don't worry, Twitcher will 'give the squad players a chance'..........and they'll duly show why they're not in the first team. It was bad enough watching Armband Traore thinking he was still playing for the Gillespie Road Glory Hunters yesterday! Watch SWP get a start!

Basically, two potential entries to your event may depend on our team's progress in the FA Cup. Meanwhile, by us discussing it here you get your event's promotional thread nudged to the top of the message board. All very relevant to all three of us I'd suggest. ;)
Hope you enjoyed the hacking, will you be involved in the enduro event (on or off a machine)?

No problemo, might as well name the teams then :-) used to be a Gunners fan four decades ago.
The enduro/ trails/ MTB course is for limited practice only and keeps the paths open otherwise the brambles take over, we followed a pheasant down through the woods which is one of his pets, plus all the other bird species (don't look at them as they will see you as a threat and make a hasty retreat) inc deer which use the paths on a regular basis.  Good practice for honing your bike (MTB) handling skills and one with an engine   ;)

QPR :-) Gives us more ups and downs than a typical GdS ride though unlike Huff n Puff I gave up the season ticket years ago!

Indeed, in fact the ball probably qualified for an Altitude Award in our 'hoof and puff' shambles against Croydon Palaver today.

Hey Chicane, unfortunately not, it's strictly roads with tarmac. What's your choice of wheels for this one  :-* :)

I'll be on my mtb I expect, although I've had my skates out lately. You've given me an idea! - Is that against the law? (just for interest of course!) :)

(snip) I've had my skates out lately. You've given me an idea! - Is that against the law? (just for interest of course!) :)

Rumour has it that the Knotty 600 org used a skateboard on a 200 km last century.  Also a chap rode the Elinith 300 on a BMX . Eight wheels are fine, but propulsion must be via human effort. Nothing with internal combustion or lithium iron/ lead acid elecki power, hydrogen fuel cells or solid fuel rockets are also out too. Not too sure about clockwork as one has to wind it up in the 1st instance, anyone.... ;D

LOL! I think I can get the rockets off the back...#itsnotrocketscience.

Actually these are specially designed outdoor skates with larger wheels - only 2 per skate - to cope with a few bumps etc. Not sure they and my skills are quite ready for the roads of Britain yet but maybe there is a flat-ish route somewhere without too many potholes or cars...

Here's a photo in case you want to see them. (Sorry if you see anything else I have had to email one of instagrams associates recently as we kept seeing lots of ladies showing off their wares on our website!)

For the record - Audax UK (AUK) - Regulations and Appendices

9.3 Any kind of cycle may be ridden, with the following conditions:
9.3.1 The cycle is propelled solely by human effort.
9.3.2 The responsibility for ensuring that a machine complies with the
road traffic laws rests solely with the rider.

looks as if skateboards,  skates/ blades etc are out, but then again those chaps did PBP etc on scooters? ???

PBP isn't under AUK regulations and, since Alpo's ride on a Kickbike, PBP rules require a chain drive. I expect there will belt-drive machines at PBP15 that will get exemptions.

OK, trying to find the list. BRM only goes up to 1000km and nothing on ACP. Found these links from fellow Audaxers across the globe  may be of interest- http://www.audax-club-parisien.com/EN/51%20-%20Links.html

Good route, pleasantly hilly, and so balmy was the weather I feel like I've caught the sun.

Train home was a breeze compared to the ride down!

See you soon.

Looking at travel - Polegate seems the best station to head for and theres a service from Clapham that will get me in for 8ish. I don't know the area so just curious if there are any routes to avoid between there and Hailsham. Weathers not looking great - fingers crossed Metcheck is wrong. Chris

there may even be fresh new tarmac on the bit you use - there certainly is on the bit between Horam and Heathfield.
anyway, here's a link

about 4 miles.
See you at Peckish in Mayfield - I'll be doing nothing.

Definitely Cuckoo Trail rather than the A22. It's the way I always go and it's much more pleasant.

Various hot beverages available at the start (as per usual) inc grub for all riders inc the ECE's, think the record for the event is 220km?

Local knowledge would suggest avoid riding up the A22, it's as busy as the Smoke section (but they are doing 70mph down here)! Yes agreed ride up the Cuckoo Trail every time heading Northbound. Southbound from Horam to the start is a trifle boggy this time of year! Also if your intention is to arrive via 4 wheels, (Southbound) my option would be to use the M/A23 followed by A27 to Polegate and then follow the A22 North to the start .

Please note the event closed on the 20/1/16 and any further postal entries will be returned as I have no new cards left and all 80 cards are SOLD  plus the cafe will be rammed full...

Weather, yes plenty of that here, it's changing every hour. I can confirm the roads have been thoroughly washed today...

Calling numero uno, pm sent..

Rob you would of known if you look on your Faceache timeline! Martin Malins not Brice sighted by riders near Brightling. Martin Brice not Malins did an excellent job marshalling the riders making sure no bikes were leant against the café window. The added hill near the Horder Centre was met with  universal approval. Tim Wainwright spotted taking photos. Richard 'Trusty' Thomas visited the control despite being 'under the weather'. Andy Seviour this ride is a classic... Iddu still hasn't sorted himself out!

Thank you controllers for your sterling work especially helping sort out the cards Friday night and checking all the Paypal entries were correct and everyone had paid. Just one slipped through the net and did not enter or show up? (Note to self, check this early next event and tick them off as they enter, plus print off the start sheet before leaving HQ).
We were very lucky with the weather window and the use of the gazebo that I borrowed worked well (need to be mindful where we place it in the future due to the dog's doings lurking in the grass especially at first light !).
Cafe are very pleased with our custom today as it's a quiet time of year for them.
A26 avoidance section was well appreciated, sorry to those that had to wait at the traffic lights in Crowborough to get across the A26!
Stats (submitted)
85 entries including one rider hitting the enter now button, three times.
1 bogus entry that was on the start sheet but no evidence of a paypal payment or cheque received.
82 entries,
23 DNS,
59 on the road,
7 DNF including one broken crank! (Contact made how are you (SR)?
Leaving  52 for validation.
Worthy of noting- 3 Ladies were successful. The fixed chap (OW) apparently did not walk anywhere and Mr Barrow also rolled around with no issues.
So thanks again team great work see you in a month's time on Mad Jacks JSM.

Moan Mone section-  Please note cards are issued to riders that have entered and when a name is given to the organiser, (in this case) then a card is issued to that rider in his or her name. Cards are not transferable between riders. If a card is taken by another rider that has not entered and the original name scribed out, you will not be validated and you are not insured under the AUK Insurance, (Name's and Club withheld) Thank you, Org

Great photos Tim

Results submitted to AUK-

81 entered inc two helpers, 27 DNS! 4 DNF (1 broken chain and limped back from Mayfield, one would have had an unofficial record for distance riding to and fro from the event (glad you made it both ways OK) but no card was presented at the finish for validation, better luck next time) 50 for Validation.

Thank you to all my helpers/ controllers on the day, Lurcio, Mr T, mmmmartin, Mr P, A, and E, good to see EL Supremo on monitoring duty and a big thank you to K & S plus the Café which was 1st class for their first ever event

Weather, was spot on sunny with 7+ C with a few showers throw in for the latter kms, washing velos and roads down. The preceding 10 days weather spell was all but a distant memory, but Hills and Mills will be changing dates for the 2018 season, this is currently in the pipeline.

It has been touch and go for most of the last 10 years that this event has been run, (blame global warming).
Thank you for supporting the January version, but this 2AAA points event held in cooler conditions with sheltered lanes (no option of main roads here) will be moved and we are looking for more stable weather conditions, possibly in the Autumn without clashing with established events.. (Martin when will MSH and Hillier be in the 2018 calendar please).

Riders, good to see the regulars and well done to the virgins with at least 4 being successful with their 1st brevet.

See you on Mad Jacks JSM on the 25th February. (No plans to move this event for the 2018 season, but this is subject to weather conditions).

Org,

Dunno yet but usual mid October slot. Not that it's a guarantee of good weather as you know!

But Hills and Mills is a classic January ride which many riders look to for their first GdS and indeed ECE of the year, there are already two GdS in October keep the sequence of regular rides going  :)

Thanks  Martin and I see your point about being the 1st event in the new year calender for gds but the Auk season starts in October.
We were very fortunate as the preceding weekend had freezing fog settle at ground level, all untreated surfaces were like lce rinks.
Any organiser with any sence would have to have cancel the event being it is all sheltered untreated roads. Just too much stress!

One option would be to run the event in November, what's on then, less likely hood of the slippery stuff but no guarantees though, watch this space.

Mad Jacks JSM has 20 cards left fingers crossed for that too

The GdS season starts in January though (I changed it after the AUK season change left the MSH isolated as the last ride in the calendar year with at the time nothing until February and no perms)

Plodder's excellent Bois Ocaud de Automne is in November; a long way from Hailsham but it still attracts a healthy field of GdS regulars from as far away as Lewes

I do get quite a few riders of my two perms in January so moving H&M would not exactly stop anyone who wanted an early stab at the GdS

Mad Jacks JSM
Am just home after manning the control at Burwash: a good chance to catch up with familiar faces and chat. This year's riders seemed to whizz through fairly quickly, they said the temperature was more conducive to riding than standing around a freezing cold and very windy garage forecourt: an opinion with which I fully concur!
Was also good to hear several Mad Jack's riders are aiming for LEL so I'll see you at the start. If you can ride Mad Jack's at the start of the season you will have a good season.
I can see why this popular event always fills. Hope I can help out next year as well.

Those coffee geeks among riders might like to know the Pink Cabbage sells coffee beans bought specially in Papua New Guinea, by the sackload from Tilbury and roasted in their own machine in the front of the shop. Can't recall the price exactly, think it's about £7 a bag which is about half the cost in Royal Tunbridge Wells. Delicious coffee - I drink nothing else now*.

*Apart from some fine local ales.
**And red wine, obvs.

Route sheet updated- there's a new one way system at the start in Hailsham, which has now been completed, it also has traffic calming aiming at the boy and girl racers tearing through with random parking slots and high curbing! The mini roundabout @ Market St has been replaced with T/Lts, the surface has also been much improved with no need grit your teeth without the fear of loosing them!  ;D

Note to team- we have bagged the sofa in the Pink Cabbage Café, so no falling asleep on duty!
Thanks mmmmmartin will have to sample the coffee, there is also vegan coffee on offer

Coincidentally I visited the forum less than 2 hours after listening to Joan Bakewell's radio 4 programme on death. Next week's one will cover the whole area of what happens to our on-line stuff after we die.

Updated route sheet on calendar page as of today. Noting drastic to report, just a set of lights missed out @ 1.50km for some reason on the route out of Hailsham. Some uneven road surfaces also need noting. Standing water could = potholes! :o

Begin forward scout report as of 25/1/18- (for those that have entered).

Pink Cabbage Café in Mayfield has been briefed of your arrival, please be nice to them and support them as this is a new control for us and we would like to use them again.

Please note the other café has long gone (they didn't even bother to inform us for the second time it changed hands) it is now a dog grooming establishment so if one feels the need for a quick wash up and groom this we must see ;D I jest.

There will be marshals to help with bike parking, look out for mmmmmartin and EL Supremo in PPE! Note limited bike parking out side and by Café, also STEEP STEP down from street level!

Roads- Argos Hill 35.21 to 36.96 on- ascent and descent surface has detreated further but still ride-able with care and attention.

Infos, we will be prompting you through out the event as there is unavoidably 6 of them, being it's an AAA event and one needs to obtain these.

Info at 50.73 follow the route sheet instruction, if you are using gpx track only you will miss this! Suggested slow down and keep your eyes peeled :o  (whatever the question is, the answer has fallen down but is still there and readable).

Info @68.20 this is by the second post box half way up the climb and not the first on at the bottom of the hill!
Looks as if the answer has now gone for one reason or another, I will accept what one sees looking there, (without giving it away on here)!

Info at 82.70 this is in the normal location before Broadoak village.

See you in the morning, hot drinks and various snacks available from 08.00 on

End

HQ open and kettles are a boiling, weather, well we do have some and looks like this - http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/bn27

There will be a need to scrape windscreens as I peer out of HQ's windows at this moment in time 06.25, looks like it will be +4
degrees at around 09.00 at the start, so figures crossed for that. You are on Main roads to start with, just take it easy to begin with.
Then sunny until around mid day ish  8)

I'd better get on with it and load up, then set up, see those that have entered shortly..

Thanks to everyone that entered and especially those that made the effort to start, (some did have the leargy and family issues though) to the team, lurcio, Anton, fossil, EL Supremo, mmmmmartin. MJ's Mum, Phixe for self validation at the final control, Pink cabbage produce café team in Mayfield and yacf

Entries= 84 inc two helpers, 60 starters on the day, 49 on the day finished, 51 for validation.

Cool frosty start, which we watch thawing out before the off as the sun shone.
Plenty of banter was being bounded about. Hot drinks being prepared by Anton and consumed by most, ample supply of snacks on offer too seem to go down well. Card duty was via fossil in one vehicle as he was quarantined due to his leargy (later he had to call the other emergency services as his 9 year old battery decided to expire leaving him stranded, glad you manage to rectify that issue Mr T..) MJ's Mum handing out cards in the second vehicle and office duties before the day.

Mayfield Pink Cabbage Café, was I agree busy with some bouncing to stay up the front of the field, Anton and Lurcio on card stamping along with mmmartin and ELS on bike parking and marshalling duty's. Pink cabbage Café was great and we will be there again for the 12th event.

Rain was forecast and started just as the first ride returned back to the finish in Hailsham, most were caught as they approached Mayfield or left the control.

Well done psyclist for ECEing too

Next event is Mad Jacks JSM, same team and set up, entries open at present and close when we have a full field,

I’ll be wearing a proper waterproof jacket this time, not a semi-permeable thing. Lesson from Willy Warmer.

I was scoffed at when I pulled a dry FS260 rain cape out of my bag in the Tea Shoppe and debated switching into it from my gilet.  I actually didn't feel too cold and I was soaked through.  I think the key is layering with non-loose layers.  This creates a thin air pocket between each layer that retains the heat.  The rain cape itself isn't really waterproof but it too keeps me warm when soaked.  I ended up wearing both.  A dhb merion base layer, a dhb long sleeve jersey, the endura FS260 jacket and a b-twin gilet.  It was a shock coming out of the cafes in wet clothes after cooling down but once I was spinning I was fine.  I wore sealskinz winter boots over my shoes and sealskinz waterproof gloves (they have an internal plastic membrane between the fabric layers).  The boots and the gloves, though tight, didn't seem to do as good a job at keeping the heat in—in particular my toes were numb for most of the ride.  However, I have pretty bad Raynaud's in my extremities so maybe the average person wouldn't have otherwise been comfortable.  In this current London weather the sealskinz waterproof gloves are not sufficient for commuting 20km—fingers going painfully numb.  I wonder if it's because I am not getting warmed up enough with all the stop/starts.  For commuting I believe mittens may be better at retaining heat.

Just wanted to share my winter rain kit experience.

Would be good to know what people are using for their hands and feet if they had no complaints.

For Saturday, when would the average ride finish 2-3pm?  I did 200km last weekend in 8.5hr on the bike (25km/hr).  Never done anything this hilly before.  Last weekend was half the ascent.

Check forcasts everything crossed here... Old school newspaper up your jersey is a classic old tip the tour boys used, then bin when wet, keep some stashed, but if your going lightweight then poss not for you.. Wool army surplus socks etc are another idea, good enough for sheep and they are out in all conditions

Most finish around 4- 4.30ish, but if you flagging your be another lantern rouge.. ;D

Route checked and route sheet updated today, please note-

Due to the constant rain (some accounts of 17 inches nr Eastbourne since October).
Some of the lanes are awash with gravel & mud from the fields run off.

There are also hidden potholes disguised as puddles in some areas, you have been warned.
If in doubt dismount and walk there are only a few areas like the top of Argos hill
from 36.00km and the descent down Post Mill Lane at 36.79km to the T.

There are however some new surfaces, which are a joy to ride.

Road closure sign at 11.93km on White Horse Rd, but this will not effect the L at 12.10km Churches Green Lane.

There's a sign missing @ 14.36 km but your going Left and following the road. ( $ did say Woods Corner).

Old cuckoo trail Bridge has been removed at 42.65km, but they have left the buttresses.

There's a massive pothole hidden in a puddle between 57.77 km and the INFO at 58.67 km, so avoid the right hand side of the lane on this section just before the INFO!

Route sheet has been updated.

Everything else is OK as of today, a final route check may happen over the weekend.

Please make sure you refer to the route sheet for info locations and fill in the answers in the brevet card if riding solely
with GPX / GPS, sorry if you present you brevet at the finish to us with no info answers filled in,
your brevet will not be validated so no brevet! ::-)

If your intension is to ECE this event (yes please do), please ensure you arrive at the start in good time, we will be rolling on to Mayfield
and packed up by 09.00, if you are late starting then you will miss the first secret control!  ::-)

Has this filled up, as it usually does?

A good entry of 72 with a few spare cards left, PM me if you want to ride (on a first come first served basis).

There's a few addition observations to take note of-

Re: 57.77 km to Info at 58.67 km, there are three potholes along this section, two on the left hand side and as mentioned one large one just by the sign on the right hand side, I have reported this to East Sussex Highways so It is logged on their website, hopefully they will be along to repair this, I did see a team out Nr Mayfield on Friday so lets hope they do so.

63.08 km on the B2188 (Black Hil), there are numerous pot holes along here on the descent, mainly at the car parks along to 67.20 and the right turn up Hubbards Hill so please be aware!

71.11 1st exit at MRAB mind the pothole on the left as you turn be aware! Also Under the rail bridge further down on this section in Jarvis Brook, which is uneven so easy does it through here.

Please ride as you would normally ride along roads with potholes.

Final notes on the route up to the 1st INFO-

Also see previous notes above.

07.07 km to 0922 Trolliloes lane- numerous pot holes, surface water and a flooded section in the dip by the bridge/ stream but this is only shallow. Take it easy through this section.

09.22 km L $ Iwood lane (by Pylon) this section is uneven with gravel and potholes, take it easy along this section to 11.93km

11.93km R @T- the Road Closed sign has moved to before this Junction on the left, No problem as the next instruction- L turn on Churches Green lane is not affected.

13.18km keep R no $ - there's some potholes lurking up to the Tri 13.75 km and a large pothole as you have turned R @ the Tri on Padgham Lane. Again be aware!

14.35km L @ Tri $ Woods Corner -there's a brand new sign gone in, mind the potholes up to the L @T along to 15.02 KM

17.84 L @ T INFO, mind the first section just beyond the brow and start of descent there's a pot hole lurking there.

Again please ride as you normally do on a non event where pot holes are present, not all potholes, uneven surfaces, gravel etc are noted on the route sheet or in these notes. Be aware!

All cards have been sorted and are ready to hand out in the morning, please bring a pen/ pencil for the six info control that must be filled in.

Please be along early as we intend to roll @ 09.00 to the Mayfield control etc.

These notes will be available to read at the start, please check your name and number and mention these to the brevet card team.

Weather is-https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2647048 (other providers also supply this).

Tea and coffee etc will be available from 08.00, see all of you that have entered then

I think I'm not alone in thinking that the number of potholes on this route - and on roads in the south-east in general - that have been allowed to appear is
A) large, and
B) an absolute bluddy scandal.

not especially, this route along with many others (including mine even in summer) has always suffered from them. Good lights and careful / slow as required riding in a group will be fine

And many thanks too to the Pink Cabbage in Mayfield for cheerfully feeding us on the way out and the way back too

+1 for tough! I hadn't done Hubbards Hill on this event before but knew what to expect having foolishly reversed Meridian Hills a few years ago  :'(

Very nice café at Mayfield

Thanks MJ Anton Lurcio and Phixie  :)

I enjoyed that as I start doing some lumpy stuff again.  Couldn’t really hang around as I had to be in the Midlands this evening.  Thanks to the team for organising.

Ride 2 of GdS done.  Roll on Mad Jacks.

Results submitted to AUK

76 Entered, 62 on the road (1 pre rode), 13 DNS, 7 DNF or opted for non validation. 4 ECE'd & one never made it to the start in time (27mins late) ::-)
One tandem made good time and finished strong.

Weather was OK but misty and cooler later but on the + side of the temperature scale and not like the preceding week!  ::-)

Thanks again to the team, see you in a few weeks for Mad Jack's..

Thanks Andy, Chris, Anton and Richard for a superbly and thoughtfully organised ride. The amount of pre-ride route checking was really helpful and well worth it.
