Horsepower 100 & 200km, Saturday 10th March 2018
« on: 17 January, 2018, 05:44:06 pm »
Spring into action with Audax Club Mid-Essex's Horsepower Audaxes on 10th March. No changes to the 100 or 200 route from last year: gritted roads for the first stage on both rides. This year the 200km coincides with a motorbike track day at Snetterton, with Tyrrell's Restaurant catering for us there as usual. Breakfast at the start, and soup and rolls at the finish, included in the entry fee.

A little help is needed, from anyone in ACME [or otherwise], at the start and/or finish. Helpers' Ride/Route Check for either distance on Sundays 25th February or 4th March?? Saturday 3rd, at a pinch. For bona-fide On-The-Day Helpers, arrivee drinks and food at the Angel and Harp are on me...

I need at least two helpers at start and finish on 10th.

I'll check with team Toppers and see how things lay. I should be good to help at minimum.

Should be riding this year.   Aiming not to get taken out by a ped the previous day like I did last year.

Can I canvas opinions again for a 200km Helpers' Ride date? PM/email rather than post here please.

Helpers' Ride/Route Check for either distance on Sundays 25th February or 4th March?? Saturday 3rd, at a pinch.

At Snetterton, 3rd March is a bike & car novice trackday, 4th is a general car day, so the restaurant should be open that weekend if we'd like to eat there. I'd prefer 4th March, but the other dates are do-able.

The wee McTaggert and I are tandeming this one. Hopefully this shakedown cruise will go well.

Tandem friendly route [the 'hoots will advise if I've got this wrong], controls evenly spaced, no infos, soup and rolls at the finish:

And my favourite route sheet instruction: SO @ T  ;D

no "R out of control" then?  :'(

thought that was pointed out to me, ymmv, mine used to:
SO (L) @ T or SO (R) @ T tell you which direction the traffic will be coming from, before you see it all anyway (not but that 90% of other riders seem to use gpx nowadays).

I alas am down in Brizzle that weekend visiting rellies and doing a ride thataway.

Junction in question is a 5 way X [south of East Harling]. SO is to next arm of junction, L @ T to continue ahead. SO @ 5 way X, give way twice would perhaps be more accurate, if long-winded.

oh, that one, know it well.
as you were
(I pretend to myself it's a roundabout and use 2nd exit at 5-way junction or somesuch, but then I'm only writing for myself to understand)

Interested! Route RWG link

May also use this as an excuse to actually visit The Swan, Gt Easton, where we stayed on LEL but alas way to late to get refreshments

Visiting the Swan is an excellent plan ...Too near for a destination for me, and too far out of the Mid-Essex orbit for a mid-week drink [except perhaps on a crazy summer night]! I did get there with some of my LEL helpers in 2013, before the first riders came through.

Looking at an 08:00 start for the Helpers' Ride on Sunday 4th March. Another track day at Snetterton, so we can use the restaurant half-way round. Option of a diversion to Wally's for brunch around 10:30 too

Might be chilly for the helpers' ride on Sunday!  Just saying  8)

Lockdown lethargy. RRTY: wot's that? Can't remember if I'm on #8 or #9 ...

Currently the MetOffice forecast is showing 5 degrees on Sunday, so rather balmy.

^ Yes, we'll have to see if there's a dramatic thaw or likelihood of snow on the lanes beyond Lavenham...Suffolk has caught more snow already, according to stallholders in the market yesterday.

Sunday seems to be the better option that Saturday this weekend, but still sounds a bit marginal. I am not keen on falling off!

Sounds like time to round up the sled dog team.

Keep safe if you do make it out. There's a long and adventure filled season ahead to enjoy. Not worth breaking anything ::-)

If Sunday is looking too dodgy for the helpers ride, I would most probably be available on either Monday or Tuesday to ride the route, either solo or with others.

We'll have to see what the weekend brings. The Hoots have a Travelodge booking so if possible we'll ride, even if only as far as the first snowy lane, probably after Lavenham. Alternatively just ride the 100km route as it is virtually all on salt treated roads - only the West Wratting to Bartlow section on the way back might have to be missed out, for some bonus kms via Linton.

Early next week for the 200 would be possible for me too though.

Still watching how things develop. Next week most days would be do-able/re-arrangeable workwise.

Tuesday 6th for Helpers' Ride and Route Check. 08:00 start unless anyone really needs later. We'll have to find somewhere in East Harling for lunch as Snetterton will be shut.

I fitted in a little ride this morning - snow is rapidly melting, but on the exposed parts of the B184 up to Saffron Walden there were still drifts into the edge of the road, with the occasional strip left in the middle, where wheels hadn't passed. I suspect Suffolk lanes may stay slippy/slushy for a day longer.
