Bikes at midnight
International cooperation: Rick Carpenter (future RAAM contender, left) had smashed both his bike and his cheekbone shortly after leaving York southbound. Not to be deterred, he got a taxi back from hospital in Hull, borrowed a bike from the Israeli Lev (who'd packed on the way north) and rode the remaining 321km to London.
