Interesting piece in CW:

I've been saying for a while that I reckon Geraint Thomas is a better bet than Wiggo for first British winner of a Grand Tour. Maybe Wiggo's form this year has shown that he finally could live up to his potential. And then there's Froome, of course. But I still think G will eventually eclipse Wiggo when he gets the chance to step out of his shadow.

Will be interesting to see how he gets on in the Giro when they hit the hills. Presumably he'll take over as de facto team leader when the going gets too tough for Cav...

I think he is still carrying too much track weight to be a contender in the Giro. Uran is the GC hope.

After this year he will be a real contender for general all round hard man.

You could well be right. Doesn't seem to be slowing him down so far but I guess we'll see what happens when the road starts going up...

Yup, definitely. I've heard it said that he could be a one day classics specialist but I reckon he's a Grand Tour winner in the making.

From the Giro d'Italia thread...

Was that Geraint Thomas as the last Sky rider to peel away?

Yeah, G can add "world-class leadout man" to his growing list of talents.  ;D

Lets hope that after the Olympics he does what Wiggins did after the last Olympics - lose a load of weight, lose the track and stick to the road. I'm sure great things will come...

I think he's said that's it for the track after this Olympics. I don't think Wiggins has more than a couple of good years in him, by which point Geraint will be hitting his peak at 28.

There was a great programme about Geraint on ITV Wales the other week, one of my clubmates was interviewed about their time together in the Maindy Flyers. Sadly, ITV don't put ITV Wales programmes on ITVPlayer.

So much for that prediction!

Just thinking though... the World Championship course in September would suit a punchy rider like G... if he can use the Vuelta to get back into race shape after the Olympics...

Well? Am I getting carried away with my man-love for the Welsh Wonder or is it a realistic prospect?

Geraint Thomas must have the longest career of any professional sportsman in any discipline ever!

I think he has at least as much obvious potential as Wiggins had at his age, if not more. I don't know which way he'll go though - Classics or Grand Tours. In the Tours he has ridden he's been leadout man/driving the train in the last 10k and been a mountains lieutenant so I think it's possible. As long as Brailsford and Peters can convince him he's champion material...
