Title: Surf Music
Post by: scott on 01 April, 2008, 05:07:34 pm
Hello, my name is Scott, and I....I....I've recently starting listening to....surf music.

There, I've said it.

OK, I mean, I won't just listen to any old surf music that you buy from some guy down at the corner. No, it has to be good quality stuff. Some of it is creative, fun, mysterious and intense. And what's more, when you're really burned out by words (as many of us on here may be at the moment), something loud and completely instrumental goes down well.

I was too much of a geek to be a surfer in high school, and besides, by then the surfers were listening to punk and the Violent Femmes--or Van Halen. So I don't know where this came from, but it's enjoyable.

Here's my favorite surf-ish band and CD (http://cdbaby.com/cd/madeira) so far, and a live video

video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEuQQ6xeDtw&feature=related).

Have you run across Dick Dale (http://www.dickdale.com/) yet ?

Oh, yeah. I even have a CD collection of some of his early stuff. But some of that is too 50s-ish (saxophones, silly lyrics, etc.). He was a real pioneer, and some of his tunes are great, but I'm a bit picky.  :-[

I am a Beach Boys fan.  You can get "Surfer Girl" and "Shut Down, Vol II" as a double pack on one CD.  Fantastic stuff, as is the "Little Deuce Coupe" and "All Summer Long" twin pack.

The Sandals, who are the band who did the soundtrack for the film "Endless Summer," have made a new version of the original soundtrack album (perhaps the original masters were lost?). Anyway, it's become a real favorite at our place, even with the kid.

Oh, yeah--I hadn't thought about them in a while; will have to check them out again.

The Mermen are also supposed to be pretty good.

All right, then, clever clogs - how's about Dick Dale (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OJXe6SY-B8&feature=related), with what we'd all know as the Home Truths music (and then reminisce fondly about John Peel)

Very good though.

"Home Truths" was a BBC radio 4 programme presented by John Peel which used the first 15 seconds of Dick Dale's "Let's Go Tripping" for its intro. The programme was a complete and utter waste of time and the worst thing Peel ever did, and unfortunately a lot of people associate "Let's Go Tripping" with it.

Nobody's mentioned Jan and Dean so far.

I said "surf music," not "beach music."  ;)

If you watch "The Blues Brothers", Matt "Guitar" Murphy is using an red SG with a chrome scratchplate in the rednecks' bar and in the big show.  It's heavily associated with Angus Young and Tony Iommi, but wasn't really designed for HM - it was just supposed to replace the Les Paul in 1961.
