6, 12 and 24 hour velomobile record attempts underway
« on: 01 July, 2023, 05:42:38 pm »
At the moment there are 7 people on a racing track going for various records. Daniel Fenn is a DNF but his partner Nici is still going.

Matthias König has ridden 71km with an average of 69 km/h (in a Snoek)

Holger Seidel, who got the Germany South to North record last year, is going well in his Bülk.

Get in, Matthias!  He's a smashing chap and hopefully will be back in Battle Mountain this year.

Ruben has beaten the 24 hour velomobile record.

So will Holger Seidel, but he was slower than Ruben and started 30 minutes after him so well not hold the record.

The blog is a bit disorganised and all in German but is here: https://droplimits.de/Rekordversuche/blog-24h-rekordversuch-aldenhoven-2023.html

Not sure if the numbers are actually in there.

The 24 hour record by Ruben was 1256km with an average watts of 150. He was in a Milan SL

1256 km in a day, that's nuts.

On the subj. of record attempts BRITAIN's James Coxon is having a crack at the 100 km for unfaired trikes on Saturday.  Geraint Thomas National Velodrome of Wales, Newport, starting around hours 18:00.

That's exactly what my wife said (in french) when I showed her this post. She is not a cyclist!

What I hadn't realised is Ruben only rode his first recumbent/velomobile two years ago, and was off for a lot of the time earlier this year with injury. He rides upright race bikes loads (not necessarily helpful training for recumbent muscles). He looks about 20 years old too, so I think is definitely one to watch for the future!

The other guy who beat the record, but by less, is Holger Seidel who's about 55 I believe. When I am at velomobile events most riders are over 40 as younger people rarely have the money for a VM. If Ruben is an example of what you can do in a short time as a young and sporty velomobilist then I think there is a very bright future for these records. Especially as the weather wasn't optimal this time.

Wind and rain towards the end of Matthias' 6 Hours, according to Hans Van Vugt whose coverage I got in approximately three separate places on Farcebok simultaneously.  Next time, Hans, post and then add comments to the original  :(

One story had it that when Fabien Canal took over as engine of Altaïr 6 (RIP) in Battle Mountain, the first time he'd ridden a recumbent of any sort was when they went out to practice their launch technique on Poo Road the day before the racing started :o By the end of the week he was the second fastest rider in history. Women’s record holder Ilona Peltier had about a month of riding recumbents on the road.

Anyway, James smashed it. Velodrome timing system reckoned 2:04:03 and ours 2:03:58 or thereabouts.  For 100 km  :o

James was wondering whether he might break the Hour record (which he set last year) on the way, for about the first twenty minutes anyway.  He was banging in sub-18 second laps for about the first 10 km but couldn’t hold that pace for two hours chiz.  He said last night “That’s it - no more record attempts” but everyone else in the Pubbe seemed to think otherwise ;D

Belated pics from James' record run: https://www.flickr.com/photos/mr_larrington/albums/72177720309698182/with/53039768148/

Velodrome timing says 02:03:57.189 and backup says 02:03:58.400, so I think we'll go with the former  ;D  Time shown on the Big Screen in the photies was before Steve had jibbled the numbers to take account of, er, something.
