BN: the usual shitty underesourced week at work.
GN: Bumped into a couple of escaped former colleagues after work.
BN: +6 pints later after escaping from the Women Of Doom who've come down from Lockerbie for the Grand National, I'm only fit for reheating pizza.
MBN: Fall asleep & burn pizza
GN: Wake up before its necessary to call fire brigade.
BN: Crispy pizza... :(

BN: lost my job with 3 days notice a few weeks ago.

GN: Interview within a week with Job#1 - went really well, job sounds fantastic.

BN: Came a "close second", but they "may have another opening within a month or two"...

GN: Interview with BigGlobalCorp - went well, like the team, work reasonably interesting.

BN: It's in Docklands.

GN: Offered the job.

BN: Twattish screening process. Then they dick me around for five weeks saying "you can start Monday" followed by "sorry, slight problem, start a week later". Repeatedly.

GN: Friday morning: I have a fully signed contract and firm appointment for induction Monday.

BN?/GN?: Friday afternoon: phone ringing off the hook - Job#1 have the new opening and want me to start a week on Monday!

Dilemma: What to do now??

PO, in those situations I go with the one I would feel happiest in, if both score equally on that front, the one that pays the most.

If they were both on the table, it would be easy.

But: I have committed to BigGlobalCorp, and as a rule I don't go back on my word, despite the fact they would have no qualms doing so. They pay more, but are harder to get to. I'm not really a fan of BigCorps but the team seem more like me despite being within such an organisation. Job#1 has much more exciting tech, and is more ethically sound, but I've only met the hiring manager.

I've not responded yet, the plan at the moment is to turn up tomorrow and see how it pans out (I won't be 100% convinced it exists until I've got my Brompton under the desk) and let Job#1 know by the end of the day.

PO you sure the 'new' position is not as a result of their preferred candidate not showing up for Job 1?

Good point! He would have been due to start three weeks ago, so perhaps it's shit and he's walked out...

Surely the next line is:

GN: Have to get a Proper Bike.

What's their objection to Bromptons?  Lock-in to a specific supplier?  I believe people have successfully come to arrangements with Halfrauds to source Bromptons in the past...

Specific supplier, I can have a Bickerton, Dahon or Dawes folder (or some god-awful cheap shit or Montague). I've asked if they can get me a Brommie and the answer is no.

Bah.  Not that some of those aren't perfectly nice bikes, but nothing folds like a Brom.

I iz one of those peoples.
Halfrauds pretty much washed their hands of me when I told them I wanted a Brommie, pointing me instead at my LBS/Brommie dealer.
Which dealership are you having to contend with, Clare?

Cyclesolutions

I'm sorry to hear of your sub-optimal experience with them.
Have you tried any of the following, in the following order?

Reasoned negotiation.
Tears.
Pointing out that their name contravenes trades descriptions. They are, in fact, Cycleobstructions.
The cluebat.

GN: First ride round Arran yesterday*. Wonderful weather, nice group of riders from CC Ecosse, great day

BN: When putting suncream on before the ride, I forgot to use it under my armwarmers. Of course they were removed early on and I now have a pair of pink arms :-[

Grumble: One of the rear spokes in my new bike's wheels unscrewed from the nipple completely so I have a wonky back wheel until I fish out the nipple and fix it this afternoon.
