Who makes short STRAIGHT bar ends?
« on: 26 June, 2021, 11:36:31 am »
A Brompton S-type needs bar ends at 90 degrees to the handlebar so they pass either side of the front wheel when folded.  Most bar ends are cranked inwards from the clamp (presumably to reduce the risk of hooking trees when MTBing, since I can't see any ergonomic advantage).

My red Brompton has Titec Ergo Mag magnesium bar ends but these aren't made now*.  Any suggestions?

*obviously they still come up in an Amazon search, because Amazon are out to ruin the Internet

Do the ergon GP3's not work? I have them on my brompton, but it's a 14 year old M16R*

I've got GP2s on my S-type.

Oh no, I don't like the type with built-in grips.  I prefer the 90s MTB XC look.

Cane Creeks?

Are they dead straight when fitted?  I bought a pair of these: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251454650912 which look perfect...but they are actually angled; the clamping hole is at an angle, which isn't apparent from the photos

I have lots of never-ridden bar ends to sell.  If only Titec still made the type I have on the other bike!

https://www.bicyclehero.com/gb/ergotec-evo1-bar-ends-adjustable.html might do the job. I see I am repeating an earlier suggestion.

I took a set of long bar ends from our garage stock, fitted them and used a pipe cutter to trim them to the millimetre to clear the ground and the front wheel on my B. I tweaked bar end angle and brake lever angle and trimmed the bar ends three times before everything was optimised. The no name bar ends originally looked a bit like https://hollandbikeshop.com/en-gb/branded-bicycle-parts/ritchey-bicycle-parts/ritchey-bar-ends/ritchey-comp-bar-end-102mm-aluminum-black-644560/

You have three positions: Handlebar, at right angles to handlebar or resting on the part projecting in front of the handlebar.
Nice and chunky and well shaped for comfort.

They stopped sending stuff to the UK and I don’t know if they have restarted.

I'm going to try nobby's suggestion first.  I really got lucky 12 years ago with those Titec bar ends, as so few will fit!

The desktop version of the site says they do, the mobile version doesn't.  It may just be crappy Firefox rendering.

I ordered something from them about a week ago, and the order was accepted... Then two days later I got an email saying I was getting a refund. No explanation, so it might not be location-related, I suppose... 🙁

The Cane Creek ones do fit, thanks for all the suggestions.

Please note I am not using standard S-bars.  These are Ergotec bars cut down to be about 1" wider than the S-bars (1/2" each end) to allow room for almost standard width grips.  If you put bar ends onto S-bars with the old type of brake levers, you only have room for 85mm grips.  The new integrated brake/shift levers are better in this respect because there is only one clamp and they can go further inboard.
