Failed to remove virus from Windows 7
« on: 08 May, 2015, 08:47:03 am »
C. has learnt at her expense never let a teenager use her laptop with an administrator account!

I removed all the free software that had been installed and disinfected it (windows 7) using two different antivirus boot cd's.  Then installed Kaspersky internet security.

It appears that the internet connection is being redirected.  Kaspersky scans are not detecting any infection.

One of the recovery CD's is missing (i.e. no Windows 7 install media)

Time to fit a new hard drive and install Linux?

Is there a recovery partition on the laptop's hard disk drive?
Start -> Right Click Computer -> On the context menu click 'Manage'
In the computer management window expand 'Storage' and click 'Disk Management'
Look for the disk that has the C:\ drive on it, usually 'Disk 0' - you should hopefully see it split into multiple partitions. If so, then chances are one of them is a recovery partition.

What is the make/model of the laptop?

Can you create a new internet connection or do a reset (saving the data).

Certainly no need for a new hard drive in any case.

I'm very pleased with the Ubuntu I installed last week. Installation was entirely problem free and totally plug and play automatic.

Have you checked it's not just the home page in the browser that has been reset to something nasty or it has been setup to use a proxy ?
I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that.

Been a long time since I've needed to know, but can you still download Windows (from Microsoft or elsewhere) and restore from that, using the product key on the case sticker?

Have a look at the DNS server settings in networking TCP/IP.

I had a similarly easy OS install the other week.
