Friend of mine moved into a house and discovered the Edwardian-style bell-pull operated an impressive mercury switch from the days before health & safety.  Bonus.
Late to this party, but somewhere, in amongst my Dymo TM labelled drawers, I have a mercury tilt switch which used to activate the under-bonnet lights of my first car when the bonnet was lifted.

Unless I'm in line to make a post in the "Today I learned..." thread, that doesn't sound like something that came as original factory-fitted equipment.
D'you know I honestly am struggling to remember, but it was a 1972 car with electric windows on all four doors - quite advanced for the day. Vauxhall Viscount 3.3

"mercury tilt switch" combined with "car" sounds like the type of string that should trigger Echelon .... :jurek:

Out for Christmas lunch on my own. Suddenly got a free afternoon and our local really good restaurant had a table for 1.

Coming down from the annual trip to the attic to retrieve the Christmas tat so my wife can decorate the house. I finally, after twenty years, won the argument about real vs. faux trees, and we have a faux even though I heard her mutter 'naff.' Also got the garden centre to knock off 25%*. I think I only won because the remaining real trees looked a bit sad and we couldn't be bothered spending the afternoon driving around the outer fringes of London looking for alternatives. Sometimes we buy a tree on Christmas eve at 4pm (we wait until they look like they're closing). We did that the other year and they wouldn't even offer a discount. I mean, seriously, you're closing up on Christmas eve and you want to hang onto your Christmas tree stock? I'm no expert, but I think that the tree market is about to suffer a precipitous decline.

I won't be entirely surprised if a real tree turns up. I only ever win arguments temporarily.

*she shouldn't complain, my father used to go shopping for a tree at night with a saw.

Have spent the afternoon playing with a set of lock picks - best Christmas present for years.  :o department: as an absolute novice, I managed to pick the café lock I've been using for years in under a minute.

Digesting a very nice (if I do say so myself) Christmas dinner. Got the timings a bit wrong and dished up about 90 minutes later than planned. But it's just us today and we weren't wed to any particular time.

Waiting.
The pause just before all the last minute stuff needs to be done for dinner.

Waiting another 15 mins before putting the duck on. The roast potatoes always take longer than it says on the packet but I never remember this...

Relaxing in my new dressing gown, in front of a dying fire, with a glass of red wine after a calm and successful Christmas Day with my wife, her son and his partner. And a bonus, despite my novel (to me) cooking method, the skin on the leg of pork crackled up nicely.

I haz Tasks, viz. swearing at a picture hook, faffing with Lt. Col. Larrington (retd)’s iPad, taking him shopping and dismembering a body.  No, of a goose.  All of which will have to wait until I have absorbed caffeine.

Asset stripping the turkey.  There will be turkey and ham pie tonight.  And after the pressure cooker has burbled the remains of the carcass, there will one hell of a turkey stock.
