Or go home via the 277/D6 bus in lycra and SPDs and risk being beaten up?

Depends on which brake, and the route.

I'm much more likely to cycle with no working rear brake, than no working front brake (I'm assuming this isn't on a fixie).  If there are hilly bits, you need a rear brake to slow down, since the front will tend to snatch.

Assuming it's the rear brake that's gone, and it's not all steep downhills, I'd be inclined to risk it, but take things very carefully.
Actually, it is rocket science.

Well, you'll have plenty of weight over the rear wheel where your remaining brake is so I'd be inclined to bike it.

But then I hate buses.

It's on a geared roadbike. Route is flat and only 1.1 mile, at this time it's a bit chaotic though so I'll wait a bit.

Do you live in a hospital? If so, press on regardless.

You might be getting a blue and yellow taxi if you aren't careful though.

A mile you say - if it gets worry just get off and become a pedestrian. It'll only take you 20 minutes if you were to wheel the bike the whole way.

Aye but my back wouldn't have left me. I have trouble walking a mile without any baggage. Anyways, got home safe :)
