Pendle 600 - Anyone know any details?
« on: 21 November, 2011, 08:02:59 pm »
I have been spending my idle hours mulling over the calender for next year and have long fancied a good ride in the Pennines. Anybody know any details for the Pendle 600?

It looks promising and offers A(2) and only £5 entry fee.

It also promises 9,000m of climbing so I think a fast time is out for me.

Set a fire for a man and he will be warm for a day, set a man on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life.

Not a lot of information I'm afraid other than it's Pendle rather than Pendal. Sorry to be picky but I'm from there, it's even the name of my cat!

BB and Martin, Andy Corless was chortling over this one after we finished the Last Chance Dales Dance in October.  I can't remember all the details but I think it's going to be doing Buttertubs from the north, Nick of Pendle, Park Rash (Coverdale) and possibly even Rosedale Chimney - and that's just the ones I heard before I fainted.  The scenery will be absolutely fabulous and if I do it I should get a really good look at it because I'll be walking a lot of it.  Oh and it would be churlish to miss out Fleet Moss while we're there.  I'm just hoping I'm away on holiday that weekend; point of honour, don't you know?

I have this information as of now.

2012 is the 400th anniversary of the Pendle Witch Trials of (Yes you guessed it - 1612)!

To commemmorate this I've decided to put together my knowledge of 20+ years of cycling in Northern England and organise this 400-mile ride (well nearly - 378-miles to be exact, or 609km in Audax terms); around Northern England.

Obviously, I'm still in the middle stages of planning; but the ride will be a complete anti-clockwise circuit of northern England, visiting both coasts. The route heads out of Lancashire through the southernmost part of the Yorkshire Dales before climbing over the North Yorkshire Moors to Robin Hood's Bay on the east coast. A long leg around the northern Pennines follows, before taking the ride into the Lake District. After visiting the west coast, the route returns to Lancashire crossing the southern Lakeland Passes and the Forest of Bowland.

If I can wangle this with her indoors I am in.

Not that it is a deciding factor but will there be sleeping provision on route?

You read my mind !

Not a deciding factor, but very significant on a tough route with possible exposure to 'weather'.

This sounds like an excellent ride in some staggeringly beautiful parts of the world, rather upset that I will be on holiday that weekend. Grrr.

If it's practical as a perm/DIY, then maybe one to put on the 'to do' list sadly.
Right! What's next?

Ooooh. That sounds like a daft idea.  I am in!

This is very interesting....

It's gonna be a toss up between this and the Bryan Chapman for me. (Mrs J has made it quite clear that I can't do both:( ). And I've never done the BCM, so it's gonna be a tough call.

Do you see it as something that will run in future years too?

Also, by 'lakeland passes' are we talking Hardknott & Wrynose?

Dammit Andy, you've got me tempted.  This is not good for my new year's resolution to do less audax!

Following on from my previous post:

With the planned route starting from Pendleton, the controls are at:

Ripon 76km
Robin Hood's Bay 169km
Stokesley 218km
Barnard Castle 273km
Hexham 331km
Melmerby 383km
Seascale 474km
Carnforth 556km

There's a planned sleep control in, or somewhere near Melmerby, whilst Seascale control will also be a pre-booked sports hall and will include food/sleep arrangements if required.

There's obviously some confusion over the route, sorry to dissappoint, but there's no Nick o' Pendle; Buttertubs or Park Rash. However, these climbs are included on some of my forthcoming 200s next year!

On the route itself, some of the main climbs include:

Sutton Bank (optional)
Rosedale Chimney
Robin Hood's Bay
Eggleston Common
Edmundbyers Common
Hartside Pass
Whinlatter Pass
Hardkn*tt & Wryn*se
Trough of Bowland

Hope this is of help for now.

There'll be a website for this event in the new year.

OK, Andy, I obviously remembered it wrong!  You can imagine I'm desperately disappointed that there is no Park Rash, Nick Of Pendle and Buttertubs - not!  Still don't know about hols yet but I'm getting the maps out!

Cheers and thanks for some good rides this summer

No one will ride up the Rosedale Chimney - that I can confirm now.

Cecil Ilsley, who, I would guess (and I hope he will forgive me if I'm wrong) is in his sixties, rode Andy's last ride of the summer, the Last Chance Dales Dance 200 which is "only" 3AAA.  He has a 26 front and 28 back (I think) and told me he'd got up the Chimney on it.  He paused at a bend but he did ride the whole thing.  So, he'll get up it, for one.  Or did you mean that the route will take riders DOWN it?  That doesn't sound like Andy!

I imagine there won't be many riding all of Hardnott either. Especially with about 500k in the legs by then.

Google maps shows the shortest route to Ripon being over Greenhow Hill - on my road atlas THERE BE CHEVRONS aplenty! Looks 'orrible.

That depends on the miles / climbing you have done before you get there...
I managed it on a hilly sportive ride last year after 140 Km's and 4 other really tough climbs. ;)

As the ride is anticlockwise, riders will climb it quite early, after a similar sort of distance (but probably less hills, if you did the Fred).  The real test will be Hardknott, which is twice the hill IMO and which will come much later in the ride - and then they'll have to do Wrynose..
