Title: What beer are you having for Christmas?
Post by: CommuteTooFar on 13 December, 2011, 03:34:47 pm
I was pleased when the doorbell rang this morning at 7.30am just as I was about to go out my Christmas beer arrived

24 bottles Huyghe Delirium Tremens
24 bottles De Bie Helleketelbier
20 bottles Dortmunder Union Export

I considered buying Delirium Christmas but I find it heavy going. A bit like Delirium Nocturnum but more alcohol.

Edit: I should point out this will last me beyond Easter

I went to Tesco yesterday, as they have a special offer on lots of good beers at the moment & splashed out on lots of goodies, including St Peter's Stout, Marston's Pedigree VSOP, Fuller's ESB, Fuller's 1845 and other treats, including White Shield. Nothing under 5% and nearly all over 6%, hic!

I should have locked it all away in the garage, as the St Peter's Stout didn't make it through the evening.

I'm picking up a minipin (18 pints) of Mighty Oak Captain Bob (http://www.mightyoakbrewing.co.uk/mightyoakbeer.htm) on the 22nd, which should have settled perfectly for Christmas Eve/Christmas.

Last Xmas the guy I normally drink Leffe Brune with gave me a 3L bottle of Chimay Bleu. I haven't drunk it yet.
Must remedy that soon. Can't do it all by myself though.

Ah Prosecco , normally I wouldn't even use the stuff to wash my wheels , but a couple of months ago we were in this fine establishment

and the proprietor offered us a couple of glasses buckshee. Churlish to refuse we thought. It was Terre Nardin Gold . We told him how much we liked it and he gave us a bottle.

What a guy.

Don't know yet but I'll call in at Bottle Shop (http://www.bottle-shop.co.uk/) and see what takes my fancy.

According to their current beer list, they have a few Christmas beers in, including Mikkeller's Santa's Little Helper (2009 Barrel Aged Red Wine Edition) - a mere 11% abv and £12.50 for a 33cl bottle. I reckon one of those might go very nicely with the Christmas pudding. The Goose Island 2009 Christmas Ale also sounds interesting and is a more modest 5% abv and £8.50 for a 660cl bottle.

I thought I might pop in there until I saw their prices.

The "ordinary" beers are indeed more expensive than supermarket prices (eg Thornbridge Kipling is £3 compared to Waitrose £2.25, and London Pride is £3 compared to £1.75 in Tesco) but you can't really expect an independent to compete with supermarkets on price and I don't shop there for stuff I can get cheaper elsewhere (Tbh, I'm not sure why they even bother stocking London Pride). For me, the main reason to shop there is that they have some amazing beers that you just can't get anywhere else, not even Waitrose.

We had Christmas dinner with my parents yesterday (since they'll be away next week). I took some Goose Island 2009 Christmas Ale along. Bloody good it was too. A full-bodied brown ale with spicy, nutty, citrussy flavours and warmingly alcoholic. Highly recommended.

I have been singing the virtues of the Tesco Simply range. The stout and dark ale are very good and £1.33 a bottle. I have lots of those in stock. For the Solstice, I shall be opening my St Peter's Stout, Adnam's Broadside and a McEwan's Champion Ale. I may yet stock up on some Czech lager.

I have 36 cans of Stella for the uninitiated.

I've provided the beer for our family Christmas get together - a Woodforde's Wherry homebrew kit, souped up with a bag of DME (which will bump the ABV up to around 5%) and a load of extra Fuggles and EKG hops. It's been in the barrel conditioning for a couple of weeks now, so should be in peak condition by Christmas.

My dad is also getting a load of Gadd's in, just in case something goes wrong with the homebrew, but I had a little taster the other day and I must say it's coming along very nicely.

I can send you the recipe if you want? A bit late to brew it in time for the 25th though...

Yes please! I probably won't get round to it any time soon, but it sounds like a good one to do for next Christmas.

I'm not familiar with Magnum hops but I just looked them up and apparently they're the main hop in Sierra Nevada Torpedo, which I like, so that's a good sign.

Our local Asda has that in bottles.  Very nice.
Somehow, MrsC (who usually drinks Kir, with cider as a second preference) has rather more beer for Christmas than I do. Something wrong there.
There's a pack of Ch'ti Ambrée from the summer holiday, some Meantime Chocolate Porter, Whitechapel Porter from Asda...
I must have bought something for me!

I have quite a good supply this year

24 3 Pawel Kwak
24 23 Delirium Tremens
12 Delirum Christmas
12 De Kerstbie
11 12 Chouffe N'Ice

I own the correct glasses for the Kwak, Chouffe and Delirium Tremens. I have a De Bie Helleketelbier glass but it is not for Kerstbie. Delirium Christmas has pink elephants with santa hats or reindeer instead of elephants but I have neither.  Otherwise it is the same glass as Delirium tremens.

Can you spot which beer I was drinking during the Autumn Internationals and which one I am going to drink during the Six nations?

Whatever is in my favourite craft beer emporiums, but I do have a couple of bottles of Bible Belt stashed away, along with a range of barrel-aged barley wines (admittedly this has built up because I usually take a look at the ABV and think, erm, maybe not tonight). I think maybe a bottle of Burning Sky Cuvée with Christmas dinner. The inlaws are buggering off to Spain this year so we have the holiday to ourselves, which is the first time since we married.

The kink in courier space was flattened out and once the boxes had swam the channel parcel force delivered them in less than one day.

Annoyingly I bought 2 Christmas Mix cases.  They were obviously pre-packed. So I got two sixteen bottle boxes. One 32 bottle box would have been cheaper.

Do they offer a 32-bottle mix? Their website is only showing me 16-bottle cases.

(And in answer to the thread question, I'm planning to finally drink some of the barley wines/imperial stouts etc. that I've been saving at the back of the beer cupboard; as my kid brother should be visiting it means there will be multiple people to share some of the more headbanging bottles...)

If you buy more than 16 individual bottles they put it in a larger box. I know they use a 32 bottle box.  It would make sense that they have 24 bottle box to but I have not seen that. In a previous order when I bought more than 32 it came in a 32 + 16 combination. (There are courier weight/safety issues per box)

I had ordered the 2 of the 16 bottle case. I also ordered 24 other bottles plus a gift box. The first box to arrive was a 32 bottle box with the end dividers missing. The gift box was in that space.

I use this company even thought they are not the cheapest. I used to use one that used polystyrene in their packaging so being a light green person I rejected them in favour of my current supplier.

The boxes are quite good like a wine box made with intersecting boards to make square bottle slots of a suitable size. They also arrange the intersections so that there are half slots around the edge so the bottles are not next to the box side.  This protects the bottles from moderate knocks.

Bought a case of limited edition Durham Brewery Imperious in the summer of last year. It was a special as it had been stored in a whisky cask. The brewer reckoned it would be fully developed for this Christmas but unfortunately there are only three left.

I guess it must be a success as they're now doing an imperial stout called Redemption which is stored in whisky casks.

Bin day today.  My blue glass bin was packed carefully to hold a few more than the just throwing bottles in method. Not quite enough. When the man came I quickly grabbed the bin half filled again and chased the bin man up the road.  He had stopped.  It was not just me his big blue bin was full and he was waiting for the lorry before he could service the rest of the street.

Some of the barleywine was tackled, but the bottle of barrel-aged Strongman remains unmolested for now. As it turned out, we were out more than anticipated, and a 750ml bottle was a bit too much to appeal as a night-cap. We quaffed the Pirate Noir though (basically, rum-barrel aged Even More Jesus imperial stout).

From my local microbrewery (https://prettydecentbeer.co/collections/beer). Their West Coast IPA is a current favourite, with the Double IPA making suggestive gestures and saying "D'ye think y' hard enough?"

The individual can prices are less steep when you consider that a 24 purchase is 30% less.

8 Loch Lomand Brewery (Zoom Time I think)
a couple of 72 Brewing beers (again not 100% certain of the beer)
16 cans of Goose Island (for the plebs)

In the house I have Delerium (Tremens and Rose?) A couple of Vocation, a couple of Tiny Rebel and a Brew York X Vocation.

Think I'll be ok until the shops re-open.  If not, I have a bottle of Benrennies 15 yr old to work through

Te brewery will deliver for free to our address, and we've used that option a couple of times. However, one Friday, back in the summer, they were very late, gone eight in the evening, and the chap looked absolutely shattered, so we've collected since then. It's only a quarter of an hour's drive and MrsC likes the trip out. The brewery is also very close to our tip/recycling centre so we often combine the two.

Similar situation here - they will deliver but we’re on the fringes of the area they cover so I’d rather save them the trouble.

There’s a direct route from my house straight through the woods that’s easily the best way to get to the brewery, but a bit too rough to be transporting beer over. Road route is a lot more circuitous and longer.

My beer of choice was Fuller's 1845 - a naturally conditioned bottled ale at >6% that Mr. Waitrose was selling for £1.60 per 500ml bottle. Then a friend of mine gave me three bottles of something else: Proper Job (St. Austell), Bishop's Finger (Shepherd Neame) and some Old Speckled Hen (formerly Morland, now Greene King). I had the Proper Job as a preprandial. I'll not have any more beer today because I've been supping chianti with lunch, and I might be forced to have some port with cheese later on. I didn't bother to buy any special cheese as it's only My Dear Wife and me for the entirety of the festive season, and she doesn't eat real cheese on account of migraines.

This is one of the sad things of the modern world.  So many beers have been changed on the altar of spurious health reasons.  Its not just the "foreign" stuff.  Almost everything brewed in Britain has been changed.  I used to think people who imported Stella Artois as idiots.  It used to be the same stuff.  Now it is in a "healthy" lower alcohol version.  If you reduce the malt to reduce the alcohol level you change the taste.  Ok that is a mass market beer, despite starting as a Christmas beer a century ago.   Leffe Blonde,  the first abbey beer, was based on a recipe from the Norburton Abbey de Leffe. Why has this been changed to a lower alcohol version? Just silly, this is far from popular drink.

Most mass-market beer isn't worth the hangover, it's more industrial chemistry experiment than brewing.

We have cases in the porch from all the (semi)-local breweries from 360 Degree, Missing Link, Abyss and Beak. May need a few more, plus there's a new taproom up on the hill.

I don't know what I'll be drinking. I overdosed for about 4 years on pine-heavy craft IPA (mostly Vocation), to the point where I now view it as alcopops.

The local craft brewery (Fresh Standard) is very good and is a half-way house between oldskool and hipster. He uses 4 ingredients only, and generally it doesn't give you a hangover. But, you can have too much of a good thing.

I had a few bottles of ale from Lidl, Aldi and Waitrose last week. Enjoyed the Exmoor Ale, the Proper Job and especially Woodefords Wherry, which I first sampled in Norfolk in 1995.

Bought the wife one of those Guinness Nitrosurge things and 8 cans of Nitrosurge Guinness.

I like Guinness too.

I will most likely be drinking whatever cask conditioned ale takes my fancy in the pub but if I do buy some in for the house, it'll probably be something relatively cheap (Tribute in cans) and/or some Old Peculier.

Normally if I want beer in for Xmas and I can get my arse into gear, I brew a cheap bitter kit and condition it in 500ml bottles - I much prefer it to most of the bottled/canned stuff on offer and it's cheap (unless your benchmark is Carling etc.)

As I get older, I find that beer agrees with me less and less and so in the house, I am turning to ciders and red wines more.  I particularly like Westons ciders - especially Vintage and Old Rosie - I might well buy some of those in.  I know this is a beer thread but being as I've digressed already, I'll add that for me, whisky is obligatory at Xmas/New Year.

Though I like the occasional DIPA, I can't face too many 7% + cans, so we're pushing for <4-5% abv cans this year.

I went mad for it, a few years back. But effectively it doubles your alcohol intake.

The local micro-brewery only does one strong beer, called Pothering, which is about 6.5%. He does a really nice 2.8% summery table beer but the biggest seller is a hazy IPA he calls 'Soft', which is about 5.3%.

Me and the Friday night gang, who I met down there, have pretty much stopped drinking it because we suspect he filters mushrooms through it  It does send you loopy. Just one pint and I can really feel the narcotic effect.

I found out this week that the 4 75cl St Bernadus beers had been substituted with 4 75cl Straffe Hendrick II Xmas Blend.

Very annoying. Straffe Hendrick II is on my do not buy list. Not a fan high alcohol beers (unless I really like the taste).  10% is okay for a 33cl Christmas/Winter beer but 11% 75cl is not for me.

One of our local breweries, North Cotswold, supplies a range of beers - and delivers each week to our street's "beer club" - options menu is issued on Tuesdays, place your order with the neighbour who organises, brewery delivers to him on Fridays - £11 for a 4 pint plastic bottle (£12 for 4 pints of a "special" beer each week) . . . and they supply 500ml glass bottles too.

Beer of choice for me was a special called Blitzen (Christmassy, geddit?) - a dark almost porter . . .  hopefully it'll be available this coming week when I'll have another, plus an IPA.
