Kitten names
« on: 02 June, 2011, 03:55:59 pm »
Our number's just come up on the Battersea kitten waiting list and there are a pair of little black four month old boy kittens awaiting a thorough spoffling.  I'm so excited that I think I might have to go outside and actually jump up and down.

:D

To save my colleagues from having to watch me cast all dignity to the wind, I've been mailing my friends and we've all been making a list of possible names.  So far, we have:

Asafoetida and Ambrosia
Astrophe and Atonic
Aye-Aye and Potto
Baal and Asmodeus
Ben and Jerry
Ben and Nevis
Bill and Ben
Burke and Hare

But I like the idea of calling a cat "The Brain" - especially if he turns out to be stupid! ;D

Radcliffe & Maconie?

Actually, I have to confess that my skills at kitten naming are a bit limited.  My cats were Rebel Songs and his sister Winnie Mandela.*  Later, I had Rosa Luxemburg. :-\

* Actually, now I come to think of it, I didn't name that pair - it was Jane.

We had a stray grey cat arrive at work for a while, so we called it Cool Grey 9, which was roughly it's Pantone swatch equivalent. Does that help?

Very hard, and important, choice

We've found that ours have kind of named themselves - a name comes to you that suits their personality, behaviour or appearance.  One of ours is named because he was a small ginger piglet (Tam) and the other because she sometimes has the aspect of flowers, sometimes an owl (Blodeuwydd; Daisy for short)

The previous ones were named Oliver (Heaviside - because he was tubby & thoughtful as a kitten) and Amelia (Earheart, an inveterate explorer and getter-into-trouble)

The one before that was Rosie, because she had a rosy nose and a gentle personality, but could leave holes in you...

But in all cases they result in names that are not an embarrassment when you call them or take them to the vet ;)

Actually, unless you're kittens become conditioned to hailing your 'whistle', like wot ours do, you're gonna have to stand outside calling their names sister.

So … if you're comfortable standing outside shouting "Pollux!", which may well be misheard by people … I'd practice whistling.

Given those names are picked for phonetics there may be some spelling variants out there already working the same gag.

Mrs. Wow suggests Bert & Ernie.

For sheer silliness, you could consider My Cat Jeffery and My Friend Julian's Cat Geoffrey.

Oedipus is a good name for a cat, especially if you call it with a West Indian accent. Can't think of a male partner for Oedipus though.
