Raveman torch / power bank USB C problem
« on: 24 July, 2022, 12:44:35 pm »
I've a Ravemen 1200 torch that will power my old micro usb phone .. but not my new USB C phone.

I'd intended to use it on my August tour.

Is this because the specs of the power bank cannot handle usb c for some reason?

Will I have to invest in a dedicated power bank for usb c?

Cheers

Ian

Check the cable is a USB charging one.
It is simpler than it looks.

I use the same USBC cable to charge the phone from the supplied mains charger.
I'm not an electronic savvy person do it appears odd and it's a shame cos the Raveman has been faultless.

Thanks for the reply.

Likely as I believe that usb-c has a power delivery (pd) spec where the device and charger communicate to determine how much power the device wants against what the charger can deliver.  I’d imagine the usb micro Ravman is a dumb charger., and your usb-c phone goes “I’ve no idea what you’ve connected me to, and I’m not going to touch its electrons”.

Yes that seems likely.
Bit of a shame..
I'll have to get a second power bank that hopefully the phone will recognise.

In theory, if you connect a pd device to a non-pd device it should default to standard USB 5V, the current appears undefined.

There is precious little technical info on the Ravemen anywhere, but it probably gives 5V/1A at the USB-A socket, or. even 5V/0.5A

So either, as Phil says, the phone is failing to fall-back to the default, or the miserable number of  ants available from the Ravemen is insufficient to prod it into charging. It's likely that even if it did work it would take forever to charge.

It's a little surprising that the charger supplied with your new phone is USB-A to USB-C what phone is it? Will it charge from any other random USB-A?

It's A Moto G31
It's larger battery was the main reason for purchase.

When it's connected to the Ravemen.
It charges for 20 secs or so and then stops.

Bit annoying.
But looks like I need to find another suitable Powerbank?
Cheers

Just checked and it will charge from any random A charger.
