Daughter MicroQ has been cycling to school for the last week (most days) and today (with 2 friends) was shouted at by a driver who had to wait probably all of 2 seconds behind them that (a) they shouldn't be cycling like that, i.e. in his opinion be on the road at all, and (b) should be wearing hi-viz.  Of course all cars are covered in hi-viz so his logic is limited.  At least they were all wearing helmets and there are no cycle lanes so he couldn't use those shite arguments too.  Surprised he didn't mention insurance and road tax.

What a prize wanker >:(
What a way to put kids off exercise and sustainable travel.

It's the sort of thing you should report to the police.  They know they would look bad for not investigating driver shouting abuse at schoolkids.

Friend and I out riding this morning, bare headed. Roadie from a local racing club seemed compelled to shout, "Helmets" as he passed us.
We were confused as to whether we should have replied, "Mudguards" or "Saddlebags" in response.  :-\

I've given up even considering what to respond in such circumstances as I've come to the conclusion that a simple resounding shout of "Fuck off" conveys succinctly what I think. And it needs no thought process whatsoever.

While "Bellend!" would be instinctive, it would make more sense to shout something equally random back, "Alpaca!".

"Do a Wheelie" long predates lockdown

Of course, but it seems to be all I'm getting from the yoof now.  No more "lying down on the job", much reduced testosterone giggles, but endless requests for wheelies.  Most odd.

This MIGHT be an actual trend. Last night :
Pop a wheelie! I bet he doesn't.

Sadly, dear reader, it was a safe bet.

On yesterday's ride I came across a surveyor with one of those distance-measuring devices.  I nearly asked him to do a wheelie.

I have been asked to do a wheelie when on my upwrong trike. Cocking one back wheel in the air meets their criteria.

Variation on a theme today, as I reached the summit of a pointless lump in a dead straight road at about the same time as an oncoming cyclist:

"I thought you were doing a wheelie for a minute..."

Also, after about a decade of recumbent riding, a random not-quite-old-enough-to-be-a-MAMIL cyclist finally gets it right:

"That looks fun!"

We'll ignore the WVM shouting "Knob!"

Some chap accused me of oogling his girlfriend, like I'm some kind of cad. He didn't use that precise formulation of words, admittedly. It was mostly grunts. Anyway, the reason I was looking at his girlfriend wasn't an expression of lust, rather that she was wobbling in the middle of the entrance to the park I was about to cycle through. I could have looked at something else and cycled into her, I suppose. Or she could have moved out of the way.

I may have shared the advice that 'he's a keeper' with her and cycled away quickly.

Probably on the other side of the bars.

I doubt any weekend for him is complete until someone looks at his bird or spills his pint. But at 6pm, outside Sainsbury's, that's getting it in early, even for Sutton.

Three kids walking towards me in the bleeding road on Bishopsgate in Norwich and the one nearest me staggered toward me. It's so blindingly obvious when they do that, it's like watching a bad actor who's been told to pretend not to have seen a cyclist. His mate went "Whooosh" as I cycled past. I swear I get that at least once a year.

Not really oiks, a couple of guys on eBikes passed us on the tandem this morning and we got the usual "she's not pedalling". Oh, the irony !  ;D

Yoof: "You could fall asleep on that!"
Me: "Have done."

And a couple of weeks ago:

Random pedestrian: "Wicked! Wicked!"
Me (under breath): "Jungle is massive?"
Random pedestrian: "Wicked! Wicked! That's wicked!"
Me: *smiles politely*
Random pedestrian: "That's wicked!  Wicked!"

(Continues in similar vein until the lights turn green.)

Students across the road are having a socially-distanced conversation with some others on the street by sticking their heads out of the opening bit at the top of their front room window...

Outside student: [inaudible]
Window student: Yeah, but you'd look like a right idiot riding it.
Outside student: Yeah, say that loud enough that she can hear us(!)
Me: *stops faffing with keys, performs the now legendary royal wave*
Window student: *ducks, realises this is pointless, sheepishly re-emerges*

If you're going to shout something at me from your van, but you're driving in the other direction ...

No, I got nothing.  No idea how that can work out for you.

If I see a youth riding along doing a wheelie I shout:

“Get a unicycle!”

I’ll go home now . . .

For want of a better thread, I've just remembered this incident from last week:

I stopped at a zebra crossing, as pedestrians were waiting to cross.  An oncoming driver did the same.
Parent to small child, as they crossed: "These people are kind to stop for us, aren't they?"
Me: "Not really, we're just obeying the law, like we're supposed to."

Car culture, innit.

Unrelated, a few days later I passed a slightly older small child, standing staring in awe at the Belisha beacon at the same crossing.  It is one of those funky new ring-of-LEDs ones.
