Are kirbys better than a henry?

That's an "are recumbents better than uprights?" type question.

Henry seems to be the business for sucking up dust, but if you've got endless human hair to deal with, nothing beats an upright with a belt-driven roller that's easily stripped down and unclogged.  Dyson need not apply.

The flaw in the Kirby approach is weight.  It's a beast, hence the driven wheels.  Barakta and I have an agreement whereby I'm allowed a ludicrously overengineered vacuum cleaner, as long as I do all the hoovering.

Ah, I get the spinning thing is better at human hair.  How does it compare with a henry extra with the vacuum powered spinny attachment?  At a guess that is a stupid question as you wouldn't have compared.

Think I need something like that for the cat/human hair.

To be fair, even a non over-engineering vacuum cleaner is beyond my ability to use without spanging my neck/shoulder for over a week. I seem to recall learning this the hard way in 2007 with a non-Kirby upright vacuum cleaner.

I've never met a vacuum-powered roller that wasn't shit (the vaccum doesn't provide enough torque to rip the hair when it tangles, and it just stops), but I've not used this particular one.

Recent one that I used, that was a generic puchased one, attached to a random bagless hoover was brilliant.  Only issue is that the brush bar does get  full of hair and needs regularly de haired.

This reads like a 19th century discussion of the vibration magnetometer, though I'm not quite sure where inductance would come into it.

Or in modern times how many people actually discuss hoover and just leave it to their cleaner or talk just about dysons being brilliant.

Bike fettling fail as the bikes are still in bits.  No idea where to buy ball bearings to replace the ball bearings in the specialised rear hub...

What grade ball bearing and what type, carbon steel, chrome steel etc;)

Quite.  Cleaners, I note, tend to use Henrys.

My decision to obtain a Kirby was based on a friend (whose mum had sadly been victim to their marketing and spent a small fortune on the thing and its awesome array of pointless accessories) bringing theirs along to help with a house move clean-up.  It noisily gnashed its way through the dust and hairballs that our Dyson[1] would choke on, and when you came to unclogging the roller you could detach the front section and dismantle it on a convenient work surface, without any tools (rather than pissing about with self-tappers into snappy plastic with the thing leaned on its side at floor level).  It also had this cunning feature whereby all the dirt and allergens were safely contained within a disposable bag that you could simply deposit in the outside bin, rather than having to bash the cyclone unit repeatedly to get the hairballs out and then dive head-first into the dusty bin[2] to retrieve the cone.

[1] By that point we'd owned a series of hand-me-down Dysons from barakta's mum, usually with minor faults to repair (eg. knackered cable) or because she'd upgraded to one with ostensibly better suction.  They were all disappointing, though the latter ones had fewer bad design features.  We also had a cheapo cylinder vac that was made of cheese but provided plenty of no-nonsense suction for cornery things like the stairs, but wasn't any good at getting hair out of carpets.
[2] Not to be confused with Dusty Bin.

My dyson comment was based on many friends getting dysons and becoming evangelical about them.  Suspect it is more to do with confirmation bias of being that expensive so must be good.

Used to make a bit of money repairing broken dysons collected for free and then sold on.   Think things were easier living with short haired partners and no cats.  But will try and find a second hand kirby.

Yeah, MIL's definitely a Dyson evangelist.  She thinks they're brilliant, which is why she's had so many of them(!)

She keeps offering to buy me one of their wanky cordless handheld models, because it's brilliant for cleaning up after the cats and grandchildren I haven't got.  (If I considered a cordless handheld vacuum cleaner worth having, I'd buy a Makita one, so it could use the same batteries as my other cordless tools.)

Built my old Univega MTB up into a double racked, trailer attachable utility bike.
Although still a single speed, so will have to see what its like uphill loaded  ;D

While out on it today I fettled a kids bike so that him and his friends could get home.
He had snapped the rear mech completely off and they had the bike upside down trying to work out what to do.
I took a section of the chain out and made it single speed for him

I've had one Dyson a DC05, it's over 20 years old currently and still going. I can't vouch for the new ones because mines still going.  I've replaced the filters and bought new tools to replace ones I've lost in house moves and that's it.

So far the machine has dealt with the plaster and brick dust from three house renovations and i've just rinsed out the cylinder and used it to hoover the carpet.

Like I said I can't vouch for the new ones they may be shit, but mine is proper good.

Mine failed to cope with either, which is why it now decorates an Essex landfill.

Anyway, fettling.  I fettled the b0rked-off arm back onto my distance specs using two different varieties of glue and an artfully-carved matchstick.  At the cost of a non-trivial amount of superglue being smeared across the lens >:(  This hastened my decision to have my annual poverty-by-optician session earlier than scheduled, which has left me approximately three hundred pounds poorer chiz.

Also fettled a couple of extra links into the bracelet of my ancient but newly-provided with fresh voles Seiko watch, as the Casio G-Shock refused to accept that a new flattery should make it work properly and the solar-powered Citizen lent to me by Lt. Col. Larrington (retd.) doesn't get enough light to keep itself charged due to my nocturnal habits.

A couple of days ago I fettled new brake pads onto the Avid Shorty Ultimate brakes on the Pompino.
The following day, on the homeward commute the rear brake suffered a sudden and catastrophic failure.
'Oh' I thought 'I can't have attached the cable securely to the yoke, and it's pulled through'.
As there were no descents on my journey, only minor ascents, I elected to continue whilst hoping that I'd secured the front cable more robustly.
At the end of the day, I was riding fixed - so the patella-popping brake was available as a last resort.
Imagine my surprise when, on reaching home without further incident and investigating, the cable hadn't pulled through the yoke at all, and was still secure.
Hmmmm....
Further investigation ensued with the bike placed in a workstand.
And herein is where the problem lay.
As I tightened the clamp around the top tube, the clamp dislodged the brake cable which runs along the apex of the tube.
Consequently any adjustments which were made at the brakes, were made against a false datum.
Once the clamp was released, all the fine-fettling went straight out the window .
The only thing about this which surprises me is that the brake did sort of (My thought was 'this needs further  attention') function on the way in to work - whereas, it really shouldn't have.

Tl;dr
I serviced both brakes.
Screwed up 50% of the service.
Had to service again.

Finished converting my old bandsaw stand to take the new drill press.

Now torn between doing a patisserie run on the bike this pm and putting the drill together (==> non-trivial lifting).
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Swapped little-used Shimano R650 brakes from my trike and Moulton to replace the middling Tektros on HK's Moulton. Overhauled a SH set of R650s (new salmon pads, replacement of rounded-out nut and freed up the pivots) and fitted them to my trike and Moulton. I may buy another R650 rear caliper to replace the remaining Tektro on the back of my Moulton.

Replaced the wornout hoods on the Centaur levers removed from HK's Moulton a little while ago. A real wrestling match but they can now be put away in the garage for future reuse.

Retaped the bars and tweaked a couple of minor things on my trike for some upcoming brevets.

Still to fit a longer rear bottom bracket to the audax tandem so it will reliably change to the granny ring.

Forwent the patisserie and put new drill together. Result:

It's a crude bugger (look who's talking, says missus's voice in my mind) but it works, it has all the right twiddly bits (except for a mushroomoid off-switch up front) and the chuck runs true. Still have to suss out how to align laser sight, though.
