OK, route/gpx up against the event (http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/18-70/) - I'll do some notes for entrants when I'm back from the Wander Wye...
I'd offer you some moral support - but I have questionable morals.

Interested but it's a bit too far to get to same day, and hotels nearby are dead expensive.

I don't suppose there'll be hall accommodation the night before? Any other bright ideas?

Sadly not, it’s not cost effective this time around.  Yes, it’s a grockle honeypot, and thus £££ - I’ve had to decamp 10 miles away...

Best I've seen is scoping out AirBnB for stuff in a 10-mile radius- there's still some singles from £20 / twin-rooms going from £25 (single) / £36 (two people) along the South Coast towns.

Ah, see that...that's your sleep stop, that was  ;D

Good job I check again beforehand - they weren't exactly forward about advising

Slight amendment to instructions will be winging its way in due course.

RIDERS! Lend me you ears!

I'd be grateful if anyone reading this (who has entered) could briefly post their main dietary needs. i.e.

Omnivore
Veggie
Vegan
Gluten-free

(I think they're the main categories ...)

Apologies if Uncle Pat has already got this info but failed to pass it on :)

M
p.s. worth noting that the McDon ... Scottish Restaurant in Botley closes at 11pm. You may bring your fries into the control (but may have to share with the controllers).
pp.s. the Botley stop is strictly BOOZE_FREE (by request of the church)

I should be able to offer the use of parents' field for camping night before / Sunday night if of interest. It's in Ashburnham so probably 20 -30 min cycle away but there are some hills. First stretch is a dirt track. PM if there's any interest. Might even throw in somebathroom facilities depending on numbers.

I was hoping to do this inaugural 600 but lack of time  / newborn duties prevents this.

Bonne route to those still going.

The clue is in the thread title :P

A kind offer nevertheless - expect to be contacted in about 10 months time!

Oxford (Botley) control was interesting, and mostly fun. especially multiple patrols out into the streets to fetch lost riders. Luckily none were grumpy with us, in fact an unusually amiable field. Hopefully that's not related to:

Reading this thread confirms there were hardly any (none?) YACF types on the ride. Lots of londoners (including a bulgarian/slovenian duo!). Usual "modern" mix of bike-packing bikes, carradice-carriers, etc etc. Speak-up if there is a parallel discussion on the interwebs somewhere.

Was it warm? Do bears ... etc?? I can't understand how anyone wanted a blanket!! And I still don't understand why rice pudding is so popular, but we bought tins-and-tins of the stuff so everyone seemed happy.

Wasn't there  an 'Ambrosia' cycle club?

Rice pudding provides sugar, starch, water and a little protein in an easy-to-swallow combination.

Great if you like it! Otherwise, there's AA Milne...

Glad you enjoyed - it's what we're here for.

If I run it again, I

a) will substitute for section over Seven Mile Rd, which seemed to be most commented about
b) will probably rotate the start around to Lewes, since Battle seemed to be such a pain for accommodation.
I'd offer you some moral support - but I have questionable morals.

If that's the road from East Peckham up towards Wrotham then I made the mistake of including that on a DIY earlier this year. It looked quite innocuous on the map but it's one of the very rare occasions where I have a) ridden on the pavement where it existed and b) bothered to stop and put on a hi-vis jacket during the day.
And then I encountered Vigo Hill....

Yes, that bit...

Perceptions vary - I didn't think the traffic was bad, but was there late afternoon, rather than early morning; I remember it more for the appalling road surface after pleasant lanes.

But whatever, there is a alternative routing to use.

(If you ever see this I hope you don’t mind my linking it)
