It takes blood and guts to be this cool but I'm still just a cliché.

It is amazing that that people used to go and watch the test as a night out.

This is the area that they used, each of these craters are not from meteorites. scroll up to see more ...

Pictures 5-7 were taken with a Rapatronic camera, a piece of kit which, with it's ridiculously short response and exposure times, captured some rather freaky images.

The spikes coming out of the bottom of the fireball are caused by the guy wires to the shot cab at the top of the test tower vapourising.

Admittedly it is somewhat esoteric knowledge, which to paraphrase the Harvard Bard, may only prove useful in a somewhat bizarre set of circumstances. ;)

Actually, that reminds me of a short story from "Earth Is Room Enough" by Isaac Asimov.

Some of those are bizarrely normal-surreal IYSWIM, while some are awe inspiring in a fascinating but frightening way. And the one of the warships surrounding the underwater detonation, what a contrast of calm and fury!
Riding a concrete path through the nebulous and chaotic future.

There is a much over-used word in the English language which must be redefined and only used from now on to convey the effect of those pictures.

That word is 'awesome'.

There is a documentary about the test programme and 'Lookout Mountain' films or laboratories (ICRW) called 'Trinity and Beyond' narrated by William Shatner which contains fascinating and informative material without sensationalising the subject.

If your DVD player is multi-region you may even be able to buy the US Army films themselves.

I'm just off to Amazon, back in a bit . . .

Well that's the more blunt way of putting it but as usual he's dead right.

If these pics don't, nothing will.
