Leicester to London ride - Saturday 9th April
« on: 27 February, 2011, 04:11:38 pm »
As Spring is on its way, it's time for some long distance trips. As last year's Loughborough to London ride seemed a bit far for some, I've revamped it as the Leicester to London ride.

For any Latin scholars, I was hoping this would work as an LL ride (2 lots of 50, geddit), but in fact the route I've worked out shown here is 108 miles. On the plus side, there's more downhill than uphill. There's one big slog near Market Harborough, but there's a glorious view from the top.

We'll aim to depart from Leicester train station just after 10 am, and stop for a lunch break at a cafe in Olney. There's plenty of other places to stop for food as well.

For getting to Leicester for anyone London based, East Midlands trains take just over an hour, and cost £14 when booked on their web site. Or you can pay £16 for a first class ticket and get a free tea or coffee.

There are 4 trains from St Pancras arriving at Leicester between 09.29 and 10.02. Most of their trains are Meridian ones which officially only take 2 bikes (and that's all you can book a space for), although you can fit more in, and most of the time, that's not an issue. One of the trains is an HST which still has a proper guards van. See page 61 of their timetable here for all the train times.

Lots of lovely, rolling countryside and also never too far from a train station for bail out points.

I won't be around to slow you down keep you company on this one as I'll be doing my first 200km audax.

I'm still planning to actually finish Loughborough to London this year. If at first (or second  :-[ ) you don't succeed and all that....

On both counts, bravo! I sort of did the Winter Wind-up a month back (I did 200k, just not the 200k on the route sheet...!),  weather will hopefully be a bit more favourable. I'm sure you'll be OK.

Loughborough-London? Sounds like another possible social....!

And back on topic, ohhhh yesss! :)

Well, as mentioned on the CC version, Aperitif (Martin) will be joining us, and there might be a couple of others.

Slap on the sun screen, as it look like it will be hot on Saturday, with plenty of sun at times.  About a 5 mph headwind, but that should be fine.

Nice route. Looks familiar ;) (Tho I cannot come along because I'll be acting as Pippa's windshield on her 200.)
What on earth am I doing here on this beautiful day?! This is the only life I've got!!

Yes, looks like the sun is getting people out.   8)

Currently, it's

Me
Jurek
Martin
Stu
Steve52
Luke (probable)
Andrij (maybe)
Tigerbiten?
Steve Kish?

and a special appearance from a mate of mine, Mike, whose idea it was to do the charity ride that we're doing in June.  He's slowly been building his mileage up, so we'll have to be gentle with him.   :demon:

As he's only done 50 miles in 1 go so far, it'll be a bit of a long run for him, so he'll be zooming off after about 70 miles before we get to Luton.

Sorry, but I'm now a definite 'no'.  Wasn't well earlier this week and still not fully recovered.  Perhaps next time.
