You may be interested in the following mapping of the routes by Bec who is a PBP ancienne and riding again this year:

"I have mapped the 2011 PBP route on Bike Route Toaster, based on the OpenRunner maps on the ACP website.  I have broken it into 6 stages:

I have included some turning points and the "danger" points mentioned in the document sent to riders.  These are marked a few metres before the actual turn/danger points (so GPS device will warn prior).
 
You may want to share this information with PBP participants, as I know many now use GPS devices for navigation.

I'm happy for the routes to be shared with everyone, so feel free to scatter the links far and wide.

I mapped them using the OpenRunner routes on the PBP website.  When I checked them against the route sheet in the dossier there are a few slight differences.  I asked the French about that, but haven't had a reply.  I'm guessing they have enough to do right now without checking a few minor route differences    "

This is very helpful, even though I'm not using a GPS, just to get a sense of the route itself.  I recall that last time the approach eastward into Villaines felt to be going all arond the houses (well, fields actually) and this confirms that it is a rather roundabout approach. Why wouldn't one just go straight down the N12 from Fougeres, via Mayenne, especially if doing that stretch at night?  Or is PBP a "required" rather than "recommended" route?

Yes, PBP is a 'required' route. To the extent that if you get lost and go off-route, you are supposed to retrace to the last point of deviation. See Article 10 of the regulations.

That explains the secret controls between Carhaix and Loudeac (IIRC) but I don't recall seeing anyone checking around Villaines (not that I am for one moment suggesting taking a short cut, you understand. I've paid for 1225km and that's what I want).
