Title: Fork mounted front light
Post by: Ribena75 on 11 November, 2020, 07:01:05 pm
Hi all. I'm after a new front light for my Ribble 7005, but as it has a mess of out front cables I am after something that can be fitted lower down on the fork/front brake mount to allow for an uninterrupted beam. It would need to be USB or battery light, not interested in dynamos (yet..) but am struggling to find anything suitable. Suggestions welcome!

One possibility is a handlebar extension (working off the assumption that a battery light will come with a handlebar mount)
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/lighting-spares/nitto-lamp-holder-260mm/

or this one that mounts off the stem faceplate bolts
https://freshtripe.co.uk/dajia-cycleworks-accessory-mount-for-threadless-stems/

Fork crown mounting is another option.
Something like this allows a handlebar mount to be used at the fork crown
https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/lighting-spares/rixen-kaul-fork-mount-for-front-lights/

Alternatively, there are fork crown mounts available for some battery lights

Trying to mount a light off the fork blade isn't too good. Even if you've got a boss to avoid the light twisting into the spokes, the shadow of the wheel is a nuisance on left-hand bends.

As someone on here suggested recently, the B&M IQ-X E e-bike light can be fork crown mounted and run off a remote battery pack (4 x 18650 at 7.4v nominal). Good light, and better if supplemented with a solarstorm x2 or x3 on low. Draw 7.5 watts and will run for hours on a decent pack.

Of course I forgot to check SJS. Thanks both.

I was going to say I may well go for this https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/lightinglighting-usb/busch-muller-ixon-fyre-front-usb-light/ if one of the fork crown brackets fit it. Not very bright but a good comprimise for battery life?

Now I've seen the B&M IQ-X though...

Either will supplemented with my Hope Vision 1 as backup, plus a diddy Moon Nova LED for emergencies.

The in-x comes in Dynamo and battery versions- be aware if you order to get the right one!

The Ixon Core matches one of the SJSC fork crown brackets

You may also prefer the price and light spec compared with the Fyre

Thanks andrew_s, I concur.

I will go for this combo.
