You doubtless aren't the first Hummers, and you won't be the last. It's pretty obvious that this sort of thing is commonplace, especially on the longer rides that go well into the night. When you get home, all sweaty, tired and slightly excited, nobody is any the wiser.

That's Bicycle Orienteering. Nothing to do with AUK. AUK was formed in 1976 and Bicycle Orienteering was happening many years before that.

The organiser of your 'Grid ref only' routesheet may have been a Bicycle Orienteer before AUK came about.

No, it was an early AUK event. The instructions posted in advance so that you could work out the route before the event.

In the days before AUK, a CTC DA I rode with organised a 100 mile reliability ride where only the start and the sole check point were given.  The shortest possible road route was 100 miles, so you had  a choice between map reading for 100 miles or main road bashing for considerably more.

You set some objectives (I'm guessing you had an unspoken time limit due to night, or dinnertime, or something), you picked a decent route, you set off.
You ate some food, then finished the ride as planned. Bosh!
