Title: Replacing a rotten gate, what wood should I use
Post by: Gattopardo on 26 July, 2020, 11:15:13 am
The rear gate at the GF house is held together by just the paint in many places.

Was wondering what wood to use to built the gate. Was thinking about using decking wood, as it is guaranteed for 10 years! or the cheaper decking for five years so that means that it should last a while painted.

Will ad a picture shortly.

I have used decking wood for a gate. It did a year before I sold the place and I am sure it will do another nine!  I wouldn't paint pressure treated (tanalised)timber as I prefer just to spray another coat of preservative on. It lets the wood 'breathe'.

The replacement gate needs to be painted green, because the current gate is Green.  Was going to do it today, but can't be bothered too hot.

Well it is not getting done as I can't be arsed, especially after the 'discussions' I've been told today.

Just seal the top end grain.

I fitted a gate 12 years ago that is still almost as good as new. It is only pine, but I gave it several coats of a good preserver and paid special attention to the end grain, as recommended above.

Still not sorted out a picture but will do in a bit.

Looking at the price of wood seems that this maybe expensive, but a DIY store have a plain wood door for €50 that I was thinking of buying and adding sections to so that the door would fit between the gate posts.

EDIT: Wow this has taken ages.

Especially if the gate is not tall, deconstructed pallets can be a good source of timber for gates.  Some pallets are even made from hardwoods such as oak.  But from what you say, you want something "door" sized.  €50 for a ready made door sounds like a bargain if it's suitable but adding sections to increase the width sounds like a faff to me.  Otherwise I reckon constructing a shed-door style gate from a few planks of treated timber would be best bang for buck.  A local fencer/shed builder might be able to knock one up for you at the right size for a reasonable price.
