100% cotton cream decent quality deep fitted double bedsheets?
« on: 15 October, 2021, 04:59:19 pm »
Recommendations please? Cream is a non negotiable colour requirement ::-)

Have tried the cheap end 200 TC Aldi/Amazon/eBay stuff and seek something considerably better.

Should one forgo the "fitted" lazy thing and learn to make a bed proper?

Have an Eve Original mattress (purchased after recommendations here - and very pleased 2 years on)

I was going to suggest John Lewis https://www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-specialist-temperature-balancing-400-thread-count-cotton-deep-fitted-sheet/cream/p3352116

but it's out of stock...

Thanks hellymedic. Being of an age, I tend to check JL first ;) Ooh that's, tempting . . . and it's rather less money than their (also out of stock double) cream 1000 TC - £145 jobbie

Ordinarily, JLP would be my first port of call in such matters.

Learn to make a bed properly. If you're going to insist on cream sheets (why? Sheets should be purest white) and high thread count 100% cotton, go the whole hog and get those hospitals corners down. Tight enough to bounce a penny off.

My hospital corner skills are rusty as hell[1], but I note that that sort of thing is much easier if you have standing access to both sides of the bed.  If you don't, then fitted sheets (preferably in a sensible colour) are a massive win.

[1] As evidenced a couple of weeks ago when I had reason to make the bed in an actual hospital.  The slippy-slidey wipe-clean inflatable anti-pressure-sores mattress made it basically impossible to make the bed properly even if the sheet had been long enough, which it wasn't.

You're right - just been watching YouTubes and reckon it's within my capabilities.

Cream, because don't want to wear sunglasses in bed - have you noticed how bright white now is in 2021? I was brought up in the 50's when whites were gentler 8)

Persil Washes Whiter…
Some detergents contain 'optical brighteners' which make clothes fluoresce, and bleaching agents.
'Colour' and 'gentle' detergents generally do not.
UV disco light would sometimes pick out a white bra worn under translucent shirt, during my mis-spent youth...

The other advantage of flat sheets is you get twice (at least) the wear out of them:
when the middle gets worn, cut it end to end and sew the sides together instead (and hem the new sides if you care to) aka sides to middle to your mum/gran/etc
I've not yet gotten as far as ends to middle.
And no, I don't notice the seam, as it's selvage anyway (whereas ends to middle is a bit trickier on that front)
Any fool can admire a mountain.  It takes real discernment to appreciate the fens.

Standard technique for making white clothing fluoresce for ghostly theatrical effects is to wash it in a bucket of extra-concentrated washing powder, then hang it up to dry without rinsing.

Just what the OP does NOT want…

Unfortunately, unless he uses 'colour' detergent, even cream sheets will get to glow in the dark...

That turned out nicely, thanks

Lovely 450TC Pima cotton flat sheet. After a quick gentle wash and an impressive (for me) newly learnt hospital/army bed corners YouTube induction, I slept like a baby all night and woke up feeling brand new. £35 seemed good value?

I wonder what 1000TC Egyptian cotton sheets feel like @ £120? How much joy is a man prepared to invest in for the rest of his life? (figure said sheets ought to last 10-15 years, changed once a week - and I'm 67 already)

I have 1000TC Egyptian cotton bed linen from John Lewis in white.
It has a satin-like sheen to it and is a delight to sleep on.
So much so, that after I've finished typing this and had a tea, I'll probably turn over and have a little more kip.
I am 63.

Potentially better value for you

(Like another of those creative/theoretical "reasons" we can use to justify 'spending' ;))

So far I'm still happily in for £17.50 per night's deepest sleep. Perhaps I'll live long enough for the cost to become an increasingly 'reasonable' pleasure too?

Wasn't particularly drawn to the satin-like sheen - but it's rather nice.

As I feel on a good roll, have just ordered a 1000TC cotton sheet (£57.80) to experiment with . . .

https://www.justlinen.co.uk/justlinen/sheridan-chalk-1000-tcount-sateen-bedlinen.asp

. . .  and if I sell my unridden since total custom rebuild 1980 531 Dawes Super Galaxy (who's cost has been long forgotten/ignored), I'll be laughing ;D

We dislike the satin sheen as too slidey. We prefer M&S best cotton sheets which are thick enough to feel good but have a very slight roughness to them.

A very dear member of our family suffers dreadfully from virus-induced dermatitis.

She has switched to bamboo sheets. They look weird, like a cheap synthetic silk, but she says they are brill to sleep on.

Thanks , that's a good point - and should have used a question mark on my reply to Jurek's post

When M&S have stock again of ^ said 400TC double cream sheets, shall investigate

Double cream is for CAKES, not beds.

I should point out that my 1000TC are satin-like - they barely have a sheen to them, and in that respect, not much like satin at all.

Dunelm?

I got my deep fitted sheets from Dunelm.  They've lasted better than the more expensive versions from JLP.
