Why are leaks measured in hours, and not some kind of volume?

Is it a way of hiding how much pooh is flowing under the bridge?

Often the sewage treatment plant bypasses are controlled by fixed weirs, rather than valves, and the flow rate over weirs is nonlinear. Possibly nobody is measuring/ calculating/ monitoring flow volume, just when the bypass operates.

I don't know the answer to that, but I do notice that the Conservatives have gone up two points in the polls, so obviously having a dump in a river worked out well for them

Kiloturds or decajohnnies would be good measures.

You can calculate flow over a weir if you know the height of water and the discharge coefficient, which you can look up, but I guess they CBA.

They don't do them any more, but Surfers Against Sewage used to have great T-shirts of a surfer riding a wave and wearing a gas mask. The current range is a bit meh. And it is probably some sort of crime for a non-surfer to wear a SAS T-shirt.

Stands to reason that if you're unwilling or unable to invest in treating the sewage, you're unlikely to want to invest much in measuring it.

I went out for a meal with friends last night. We were very careful to ask where the mussels came from. Menai Straits, which we think is OK. At least Mathias hasn't been ill yet.

Which is why I had lamb ragu & pasta. I've 2 packs of mussels in the fridge, farmed in Scotland I think. Hopefully safe enough.

AIUI EU directives on shellfish production have not been met for some time. Its all to do with whether shellfish have to be flushed with clean water for 48hrs, which of course adds a cost. Most English waters are not clean enough to avoid this. Consequently, most supermarkets will not stock English produce (presumably because of the added expense) and so import shellfish from Scotland and the EU. English shellfish is largely exported.

I don't eat raw shellfish ever. Did it once (an oyster in Rick Stein's Seafood Restaurant) and was very ill for several days.

Main problem up here is algae growth. If it is above a set level, they declare the area 'not suitable for harvesting'. We had one this summer (the blame was pointed at agricultural runoff, but almost nobody uses any fertilizer around here). Restaurants stopped stocking mussels for a few weeks.
