03 Phone numbers
« on: 20 May, 2008, 07:05:11 pm »
Recent material from a fixed line phone company offers me free calls 24/7 of up to 1 hours duration to phone numbers starting 01, 02 and 03

I know what numbers start01 and 02, but what numbers start 03?

From the Ofcom website:

"03 numbers are being introduced as an alternative to chargeable 08 numbers like 0870. Calls to 03 numbers will cost the same as calls to geographic numbers (starting 01 or 02), and be included as part of any inclusive call minutes or discount schemes in the same way as geographic calls. "

You've never seen an 0345 number before?

0345 should have been phased out (replaced with 0845), the same as 0500 (freephone - to be merged into 0800).

I recall the many hours working on the PhONEday2 project.    Internally we completed on time and I re-programmed the exchanges.   It's a shame that externally other companies didn't.   I still get cross when I hear "call in on 0500 xxx xxx" on the radio >:(   That number shouldn't have existed post phONEday2.

I'm not sure how long Melbourne in Yorkshire has been around, but it's probably a long time.  The Melbourne in Derbyshire is arguably where Melbourne in Australia got it's name from since it appears to have been named after William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, and Melbourne in Derbyshire is the family seat of the Lamb's.

Since Melbourne in Derbyshire was mentioned in the Doomsday book, it has a significantly earlier claim on the name than Melbourne in Australia (found around 1835). ie close to 750 years earlier. ;D
