Artist's bracket. Everything below it is covered in brown dust (spores)

and with a goalkeeper's hand for scale

The top of the tree looked healthy, with plenty of leaves, but the lower branches had all broken off, and the stumps of the branches looked hollow. The horizontal lines on the fungus are annual growth ridges.

I happened to be walking past this beech tree last month - except the tree is no  more. The had fungus gradually weakened the trunk over the course of several years and according to the ghillie the storms earlier this year did the rest.

The KAW passes through the small patch of woodland where 95% of my fungus photos are taken. Like this one (handy acorn for scale)

Earlier this week I went out looking for fungi, but apart from birch polipores there was nothing. Yesterday I followed more or less the same route and they were everywhere.

Beautiful, whatever it is. And beautifully photographed.

I really need to go foraging tomorrow after all the rain we've had today.

Theoretically edible survivable. Never dared try.  I have had amanita caesarea, but in a restaurant rather than one I'd picked.  Idiot cook ruined it with too much sauce. IME the best sauce for mushrooms is simply cream with salt & pepper.
I've dusted off all those old bottles and set them up straight

Never seen one of these before. According to woodlandtrust.co.uk it's fairly common in England and is also found in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland, particularly in East Lothian."

Also~: "The Native American Blackfoot Confederacy called collared earthstars ka-ka-toos – meaning 'fallen stars' – and believed them to be indicators of supernatural events."

It's petals(? leaves?) are so precisely shaped, it looks as if they've been cut out by machine. Together with the colour, it makes it look like a form of candy.

There were several within a small area but that one was the most regular, with all its 'petals' intact.
