I think softball should be returned immediately for 2012....I've been watching the Japan v Australia match all morning when I should be getting out on my bike under very grey skies!! I guess it's a lot of infrastructure for one event but it makes good spectating

Being serious for a moment if I may, I caught the World Championships of a sport that was like a cross between billiards and shove ha'penny on Eurosport the other day - can anyone remind me what it was called? - looked like an ideal potential Olympic sport - a bit of a pub-game that we could rule at! :)
Was it carambol?

Camel racing. With blindfolds (on the camels, not the jockeys - they have no control over their mounts anyway).

Rowing Slalom.  With an eskimo-roll for extra points.
Or Le-Mans-Style start in the rowing/cycling events.  Run to the boat/bike, get in/on, set off.

How about adding cycloX to the winter games? It could be spectacular!

Playground slides.

Each team gets a long strip of snow-covered tarmac and has to turn it into the longest possible slide by running at it and skidding in school shoes.  Points are awarded for length and style, e.g. one-footed, piggyback, "the Diddyman", etc.

After 1 hour, a sour-faced caretaker turns up with a bucket of rock salt and tells the competitors to do something more useful with their lives.

Most pointless punditry!
Most wooden interview with an athlete (competing and not competing categories).
Most jingoistic opening or closing ceremony that means nothing to anyone outside of the host country!
Most epic  fail!  What I mean is the worst performing favourite. The person 27th n the highest hopes that got the worst performance.
Best performing no hoper journeyman/ woman competitor.
Worst tv cut made by a local production team that means a nation misses out on seeing their country's representative compete just because they meant nothing to the local crew.
Most pointless winter event using brushes and stones on ice. Thanks Scotland for giving us that one!

I could go on because the winter games are still dull and full of pointless events. They're trying to get better with winter events like the summer bmx and skateboarding events. A change from the mostly posh brits competing against countries where skiing is a valid mode of travel learnt shortly after learning to walk.

the thing that most impressed me (in hindsight) about Eddie the Eagle was that he managed to compete as a representative of the UK in spite of the entitled establishments efforts to thwart him.

While there were those who muttered about Eddie being a disgrace to BRITAIN and bringing the game into disrepute and so forth, usually from inside a brass-buttoned blazer, one Finnish ski-jumper said “If he's the best you’ve got then of course he should be here!”

That's an interesting perspective. I don't know much about him TBH and if anything I'd perceived it the other way round; that he was the expression of Corinthian idealism, and "by jingo we don't need professionals, we're British". kind of like not needing experts

Icetrack cycling is already A Thing usually on 400m speed skating tracks.  Hour record holder Eva Navratilova has also been spotted racing velomobiles during the warmer season.

I'd also like to add log chopping. Particularly the 'tree felling' version.

I feel this post might be for me, as possibly the only forum-ist who has raced with the BHPC, done a bit of long track speed skating and ridden an Icetrack bike (at the UK long track nationals a few years back)

Yes, they are, very strange sensation but felt reasonably swift.
