Lt. Col. Larrington (retd.) has been getting anti-virus spam from people purporting to be Avast, McAfee, Norton et al for months.  Since his laptop hasn’t even been switched on for about two years…

Had a bunch today apparently from BRITISH Gas, exhorting me to open a file in Dropbox.  Having! A! Yahoo! Return! Address! was a bit of a giveaway that said communications were not from BRITISH Gas at all.  Also, I'm not not a customer of theirs anyway.

I have a "burner" email account that I use for websites where I may order something once, or for other BS reasons. This account receives this sort of emails all of the time (for services such as PayPal which I have never used).

For any important communication, I use another email account that is my "real" account (friends and family only).

GMail's been pretty good at blocking spam. Too good in fact. I edit a local on-line Arts magazine and am currently putting together an anthology. I'd just about sorted a running order when I checked the spam folder. Nine more unread submissions.

There has been some unusual activity on my Santander account.

It would be very unusual because I don't have one!

I've had two Herpes missed deliveries.

Which is interesting, because Herpes actually managed to deliver a parcel yesterday.

So, this evening, after Grace Petrie, I fired up the incognito browser, loaded a VPN and filled out the appropriate details. Oh yes, the delivery was missed!

A fake Postcode, that was immediately accepted. A credit card number created on a fake credit card number website, a made up birthday, and, of course the made up name Mr Fuck Cunt Wank.

It was fun, and whilst I know they will not spend a lot of time on it, they will spend time on it.

I noted upthread a while ago how Mrs M had signed up for a mailing list for a free book (I know, I know....) and she started getting a lot of spam, quite clearly from this sign up.
All of this crap is Forex trading, and MLM type 'opportunities'. It's all through her GMail account and is generally manageable with GMail filters, but the odd one slips through, and the whack-a-mole process starts again. In the last 48 hours there were 294 of these mails in her 'Bin' that had been filtered out.
My filter process is to find a word or phrase in the email (often in the (fake) address at the bottom) and filter by that - 'mark read, delete'.
I'm tempted to get her to change her email address, but at the moment I'm on top of it.

What I don't understand is why these aren't flagged by Google as spam. They use obvious spammy phrases in the mails, and I know the 'unsubscribe' buttons do no such thing - so how are these idiots able to circumvent the usually excellent GMail spam filters?
