Combining Olympic sports.
« on: 05 August, 2012, 06:43:48 pm »
Watching the opening title sequence of the BBC coverage this morning, the graphics cut from boxing to diving.

This led me to thinking about how sports could be combined to make them more exciting. A boxing match, but on the 10m board. Hit your opponent in the right place, and knock them off.

MFWHTBAB then suggested that the knocked off boxer could then avid the knock-out, buy doing an impressive enough dive!

What else could we mix for added excitement.  There's the 4x200m javelin relay perhaps....  Aquatic shot put? (and you have to fetch the shot back, wearing pyjamas)

Jack Thurston suggested (on twitter) combining archery and cycling for a sort of summer biathlon, which I reckon would be a great one.

Another of my twitter correspondents was asking about athletes with medals in more than one sport, which led to a bit of research. Apparently, in 1920, Eddie Eagan of USA got gold in boxing and bobsleigh (summer and winter games, respectively). In 1936, Jacob Tullin Thams (NOR) got silver in sailing and gold in ski-jumping.

Not sure how practical it would be to combine some of those as multi-discipline events. Swimming and fencing might work.

We thought of synchro long jump last night. They all start standing back to back in a tight circle, and then run outwards, and jump. Like a flower!  (and gets the whole event done much more quickly!)

Bobb has just suggested they should put Chris Hoy on a bike against Usain Bolt running 100m and see who wins.

Hoy would just win over 100 (especially if he geared down) but it would be close. He'd win the 200 by 5 seconds + ...

Someone really should set that up as a televisual event. It'd be even better than Brian Jacks doing 100 parallel bar dips in a minute.

After the opening ceremony appearance of He Who Must Not Be Named I'm surprised that Quidditch isn't a demonstration sport at these Games.  Or at least it's ground-level equivalent shinty.

Biathlon (Cycling plus rifle shooting). I quite like the idea of AUKs roaming the countryside with high power rifles strapped to their backs....

Funnily enough Jill Douglas has just tweeted that same question to Chris Hoy.  You don't think she's reading this do you ?
