Hub gears on an old Hawk / New Forest LBS knowledge, please

My Mum's bike:

She lurves it, but rarely uses it, so I was going to accompany her on a couple-of-miles' pootle around the lanes tomorrow to help get her confidence up.

After a quick inspection though, I've had to declare the first stop will be a LBS to get the back brakes functional again! She's also reporting 1st gear is 'slipping', but only in the vaguest of terms usually reserved for computer-related problems.

I'm totally new to these things and probably not able to be much less vague...

Here it is:

A Sturmey Archer 3 speed, 'K7' stamped on it below the logo banner thing.

So, is gear slippage likely to be related to tension on that cable, and does that mean with a bit of judicious fiddling we could fix it ourselves?

Also, can anyone recommend any good local bike shops in the New Forest / Southampton area?

Rogerzilla will be along in a moment, but yes, cable tension can fix slippage, although I'm not sure if the slippage you describe  can be.

Sheldon has a page on it.

Thanks Tim - I've been working my way through various Sheldon pages, but hadn't yet found the one you linked to. Will give it a read.
